New Project

Hey everyone. I've just started a pretty ambitious Mosin project and figured I'd better join the boards for questions and advice. Here's what I've got.

Picked up a 91/30 Mosin that's in really good shape.(I know modifying a rifle like this is going to make some people upset but I figure you have to start with good ingredients to get good results.)

I've ordered a stock similar to fmsniper's from Richards.

I put an ATI scope rail and bolt handle on.

I am currently building a trigger that will have a lever style safety.

I'm talking to McGowen Barrel of Kalispell Montana about a re-barreling job.

If I get my trigger to work out I have an idea in mind for moving the bolt handle further back on the bolt body and closing up the rear action ring for a better scope mounting surface.

I know that starting with a Mosin makes little to no financial sense, but I'm not looking at turning a profit. This is my first real venture into gunsmithing and I'm looking at building a rifle for me. I know I could take the money and time I'm going to spend and "just buy a new rifle" but I really get satisfaction out of making my own stuff and knowing there's nothing else out there like it.

I imagine this to be a fairly long project so I'll probably have lots of questions for everyone!

Welcome 406pat. It is indeed ambitious but quite doable. The triggers are a little tricky, but they are solid firearms. The 7.62x54R is a potent round and can be quite accurate. Please keep us informed and pictures would be good.

Sorry about the lack of pictures. I just moved into a new place and the cord that goes from the camera to the computer was one of those things that dissapeared to who knows where. As soon as I get a cord I'll get some pics up.

Thanks for the welcome!

If you can't find your camera cord, I suggest getting a cheap usb card reader. Providing your camera has a removable data card, nothing could be easier to use, and it cuts down on the wear & tear & batteries on the camera itself.

Have a great day!

You stated:..."I know that starting with a Mosin makes little to no financial sense, but I'm not looking at turning a profit. This is my first real venture into gunsmithing and I'm looking at building a rifle for me."......

I have to disagree with you. I think it makes a lot of financial sense, the rifles are cheap, ammo is cheap and most of the parts are cheap. The 7.62X54R preformes as well as most .30 cal military cartridges and for new gunsmithing projects, rimmed cartridges are easier to work with. I had a lot of fun with my MN 91/30 project and ended up with less than $400 invested.

Your images are too big.

Most images on the net are in jpeg form. The rule of thumb is 72 dpi.

This means that if your image is 10 inches across, at 72 dpi, it will be 720 pixels across.

Even this is probably too large.

Anyway, you need to use your image manipulation program to massage those puppies down to somewhere in this range or smaller.

Best,

I'll second that, please do keep us informed. Sounds like a real challenge and I bet there are allot of Nagant owners that will want to "kiss" you if you can come up with a safe and reliable alternative to the obnoxious Nagant safety.

A now deceased close friend and I have used McGowen barrels over the years. Excellent barrels to say the least. I haven't had any dealings with them since Harry McGowen retired and the new owners moved the equipment to Montana. If the new owners acquired McGowen's reamers they can likely chamber it in anything imaginable that will fit.

looking forward to seeing your project complete and at the range keep up the good work, let me know If I can help.

Mine is by far one of my most accurate rifles I have no Idea what it is capable of since I have no way of reloading, I do know that with factory ammo it has shot below .25 I love the rifle and it will stay with me till I am old and cant shoot anymore.

I know you all have seen it but its so perdy, remeber there needs to be a extractor cut in the barrel for a new barrel...

i'm thinking of building a sporter out of a hungarian reciever i have. i'll keep an eye on this thread for sure. i was wondering if anyone has wildcated a cartridge using the 7.62x54r case.

fmsniper, did you cut the magazine down on your's? it is hard to tell from the picture. i know shotgun news ran a series of articles on a mosin sporter project, but i only seen about two of the issues, and that guy cut his mag down.streamlined it quite a bit.
