Hole In Safety Of No. 4 Mk. 1

Recommended Posts

Why does the safety tang in this model of Enfield have a hole? The No. 1 Mk. III doesn't. Just wondering

I'm guessing weight reduction, as small as it may be.

Could also have been a measure to make it more durable... Solids can sometimes crack, especially when heat treatment is involved. That hole may have thinned the metal enough to allow a more uniform heat treat for the part, if it was treated.

The No. 4 safety sort of resembles a modern "commander" hammer for an M1911. Maybe they were just trying to be cool.

Thanks for the response. I'm doubtful on both counts of weight or looking cool, but the heat relief sounds plausible. I was thinking that there might have been an attachment planned or involved, but maybe not.
