    H&r Mauser

My father-in-law has one in .243. He's a pastor and one of the church members gave it to him. It's an FN action and I don't think he's ever fired it. I'd certainly like to get my hands on it. Not that I need it or anything...
  2. I took that upgrade offer over a year ago and I don't remember anything about insurance at all. 'Course if could have slipped my mind. If I'm not mistaken there is about $300 or so included with your membership. You can buy more through their program. I have actually done that to cover the excess value that my homeowners policy won't cover. You can usually only extend your Homeowners so far and that's probably the cheapest way to go. I use the NRA's plan for the balance.
  3. My Dad tried the gun shop thing back in the '70's out of frustration with his new boss, the owner's son-in-law. I don't think he ever made a single dime at it. He eventually quit both to start his new company in the trade he knew so well (electrical contracting). I followed him into that over 30 years ago and I can tell you being in business for oneself isn't a piece of cake, either. Sounds like you're frustrated and looking for a change. That's perfectly OK. I would personally look at doing something for yourself in the trade you already know if possible.
  4. Thanks, Rebel, I'll check it out.
  5. A couple of years ago I bought a Colt Frontier Scout .22 pistol in the original (numbered) box with all the original accessories and paperwork. It's not a re-finish and doesn't appear to have ever been turned, much less fired. Here's the kicker: It is a .22 LR/.22WMR convertible. The magnum cylinder in the box looks like crap. I'm certain it's not original to this gun. It's even nickel plated My question to you guys is how do I go about removing the old flaking nickel so I can polish/blue this extra cylinder? I'll never install it in the gun so I don't care whether it even fits or not. It would just look better in the box, for whatever that's worth. Besides, I need a small, inexpensive project since I'm almost through "freshening" up a Mauser project I built in '05. (I'll get a few pics once everything s re-assembled.) What's the best way to remove the old nickel plating?
  6. Agreed! I'll show your comment to the "Commander-in-Chief". Actually, I have a great wife. She doesn't really care too much what I do (gun-wise, that is) as long as everything else is covered. She just got her CC permit and carries a Kel-Tec PF9. Pretty cool gal! Thanks, Don. Good information to have.
  7. Thanks guys. I already have a 7X57 that I built on a Polish LR '98 4 years ago. In fact, I'm freshening up the checkering and stock finish as a winter project over the next few days or weeks as time permits. I'll try to post a couple of pictures when it's finished. I certainly don't need another rifle (I have 5 centerfire already) but you know how it is! Just curious; how can you tell the difference in this one and a 1936 just by looking? I plan to go to the Winston-Salem gun show next weekend. You never can tell what will turn up. I've watched a lot of your comments about the 6.5X55 over the last year or two. Never had one so I'll sure give that suggestion some thought.
  8. [atta chment=1108:mex_mauser_bottom.JPG]OK, here it is if I can figure out how to get the pictures in. Definitely a small ring. Just under the wood line above the recoil lug it is stamped CAL ST ALB VT. Left side, same location PV with a proof mark that looks like a "sun" or maybe a bomb. Crest is almost gone but here is what I can see: MEXICO (bottom of the circle) FABRICA NACIONAL DE (left side and top of arc). That's all I can make out. Bolt is not numbered to the action. Very light pitting overall but I believe it will polish out w/o a lot of trouble. Machined non-hinged bottom metal. What do I have here? I paid $65 a couple of years ago exactly as you see it. I'm thinking maybe .257 Roberts. May be another year or two before I get around to the project anyway. Thanks.
  9. Great job! I'd be proud to have it in my safe. Your son will really treasure that in years to come. Fun ain't it?
  10. I have one of these, at least I think that's what it is. I'll try to get a picture or two in the next few days. Since I'm certainly no expert, maybe you guys can help me determine exactly what it is. I'd like suggestions for suitable calibers, etc. Picked it up at a show a couple of years ago, action only for $65. Some light pitting but I believe it will polish out fine once I get around to starting on it.
  11. I have a '97 Honda 400 that has the original color wheels. I bought it new. You're correct. I'm 99.9 % sure they should be a light, not quite silver, gray. It does appear metallic. We used to have an older Honda 300 like yours that also had the gray painted wheels. My wife has a Yamaha now that uses a darker charcoal gray wheel. That's not what you want. Sounds like an interesting project. Best of luck.
  12. Yeah. Pictures please. I've always wanted to build one of those but never took the time.
  13. My wife surprised me with a certificate for a 4-day trip to Front Sight in Las Vegas. The package included a new Springfield Armory XD40! What a gal!
  14. These people are great. I've ordered lots of stuff from them. I have everything they offer for all the items in my "collection". You won't be disappointed.
  15. Congratulations! You'll like our part of the country. By mid-October it's beginning to cool off enough to be nice. I'm about 2 hours North of Charlotte. Enjoy your trip! That's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
