Usng To Go To The Ukraine?

Our involvement in Ukraine is insanity. That place has been part of Russia for what? A thousand years? It was the capital of Russia at one point. It is like if California declared independence, started killing off English speaking people and Russia started supplying them with weapons, intel and training. How would that work out? What interest (besides Qatar's gas pipeline) is there for the US?

You are right on the sir. It is an area the Russia has to go to war to keep.

As to the story Ken98k..I too hope that it is wrong. One of the few I admit things that I have agreed with Mr. Obama on is his opposition to our involvement there; unlike people like little mac.

I truly believe "Little Mac" should be locked up as criminally insane. It is astonishing that he is repeatedly re-elected to the senate.

One can only guess at what type of clandestine activities he and his cronies are secretly involved in.

What kind of nightmarish world would it be had he and Palin been elected in 2008?

As bad as I hate to admit it, we are better off without little mac. An anti-gun Republican in the White House is worse than an anti-gun Democrat. I will point out that Uncle Bill's assault weapon ban is history, but George H.W.'s is still in place.

Agreed. GHW just rubbed me the wrong way.

There was just something about the man....

As to the WH you are right the GOP would have gone along with bans to support little mac and you know the dems sure would have.

Thumbs up! My feelings exactly.

They are free. It is the people in the East of the Ukraine, who want to secede and join Russia.

More the simple fact is that Russia is not going to give up the Crimea and Sevastopol unless they are defeated in war and forced to.

Think WW lll.

I say give the Ukranians the weapons to fight our common enemy, the Russians. There was a treaty under Yeltsin to respect the Ukranian borders and sovereignty. Putin the murderous dictator doesn't feel inclined to be bothered by a treaty.

I dunno, FC. I think there is a lot more at play here. Giving them weapons is a direct attack on the Russians, just like them arming the NVA, for example. Are the Russians our enemy? I'm not convinced. Not today, anyway. 50 years ago, maybe.

It's just that I don't see risking my friends and family (should, say, the grand kid(s) join the military as that's the only job available today) to go fight the Russians in the Ukraine. I would not want to see you going to die in the Ukraine for a gas pipeline. Ukraine was part of the USSR until Stalin "gave them independence" mostly so he could have 2 votes at the U.N.

There's just too many things going on, and I don't see how it is to our advantage to start (or escalate) WWIII.

Dr. Hess is right FC. Russia is not going to give up Crimea any more than we are going to give the South West back to Mexico.
Just not going to happen. It holds their only year around warm water port and they have held it for 300 years.
Granted the Ukraine has small reason to love Moscow. But that was then and this is now.
IF we arm them we are declaring war on Russia and Russia WILL arm people we dont like. There are 11 to 22 MILLION illegals in the USA, mostly from Mexico...Russian arms shipments to La raza? IF we sink the Russian arms convoys..what stops the Russians from sinking ours? Or state of the art Anti missile/aircraft systems to Syria or Iran? If Putin sends in the Russian army to defend his port, are we going to go to war with Russia or Cut and run?
We are playing with WW lll.
Nope. better we sit this one out.
Any way something is very very strange here. If Putin wanted to, he could have found an excuse to send in the Russian Army ..to protect noncombatants or restore peace etc..and This would have been over and forgotten in a month. Methinks I smell a rat.

When I was younger I would have run to it for the hell of it. Now i dont want to see my old students or you getting blown away in a political game for oil or market shares

Another thing all this has done is weaken the USA by driving Russia INTO the arms of China. And create a new balance of power, something our progressives have loved since the 50's. Many did NOT like to see the old USSR fall and America become the sole super power.

Now we are not. Think the numbers of the PLA armed with Russian hi-tech weapons. Putin who once has a strong opposition is NOW seen as Mr. Russia . China will buy oil and gas from Russia and NOT for dollars.. If you consider how the Russians hate China, the situation that forced them into an alliance is rather odd.

Anyway, if Putin pulls back to the Crimea tomorrow and says to heck with Ukraine..go join the EU, would the EU even want them or accept them? The are broke...worse than Greece...How many bailouts are the Germans or the Americans good for?

There is no plus side here for the USA

The days of Nixon/Kissinger diplomacy keeping peace are long gone. We have a spineless leader, weakened military and I have three Purple Hearts Kerry making a fool of himself in Switzerland dealing with Iran. 20 years from now I'll be pushing daisies. Hope there is a USA left for my kids and grandkids.

The problems with the USA WILL get fixed. We are a great country. But the labor is going to be very hard and repulsive.

We went on a 50 year drunken party...Now we or the kids are going to have to clean up.

I will tell you what Ronnie did not do, he did NOT get into a land war with Russia.

The ONLY place I see Russians fighting now is for and on land that has been Russian for 100's of years.

Last time I looked that is a long way from the USA.

If the pols will not muster the will to defeat ISIS an ant in contrast, do you really trust them to fight and defeat an atomic Russia?

Nope...Not our war and not our problem.

I simply don't trust the pols in power now or the media.

If we are sending troops any where, it should be to the southern border.

We have been invaded by 11 to 22 million illegals and that is the invasion we should be worrying about.

The Germans and French etc have armies, if it is a problem, let them do their own dirty work for the first time in 60 years.

FC if you feel that you have to go to the Ukraine either with the army or as a volunteer when you retire, I respect that.

But watch your back and make sure you have a way out. I would miss ya.

El Salvador and Afghanistan were never part of Russia.

What Reagan was fighting was "the Evil Empire" Communism based and operating out of Russia.

That Communism is on the whole gone from Russia; it is more to be found now in the left/progressive party I think.

This is an interesting read:

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-03-10/worse-cold-war-81-russians-now-view-us-negatively

Also, I may have mentioned it before, but my shipmates went to the USSR in the late 70's or early 80's on grain runs. This was pretty much the height of the cold war. They said that the Russian people they met were very pro-US, very freedom loving. You would see a Tshirt that had a big US flag on it and "I love America," etc. Imagine what would happen to a person in the US walking down the street with a "I love the USSR" T shirt during the same era.

Anyway, the propaganda war is cranking up on both sides. And the trade war. What's next?
