"Variable". Heh.

 

No, it just means the threads are "V-shaped", rather than square-shaped or Acme-style (a form that's right between a V and a square). The "V-angle" is 60 degrees. The threads aren't necessarily pointed ("sharp"); they can have flats on their peaks and valleys.
