Andrew Pridham has got a web site that compares some 8mm cartridges:

You could make yourself a 8mm RUM (325 RUM). That cartridge would be a thumper. Not sure of the possible capacity but it would be over 100 grains from what I remember about the 30 Rum. Of course in my way of thinking I have no use for such a cartridge. I hunt mostly whitetails and pigs. Nothing is ever over 300 yards away, and I have eight diferent cartridges in my safe now that can handle that plus just about everything up to moose. 30/06, 8mm mauser, 6.5x55 sweed, 7.62x54r russian, 7mm mauser, 308 winnie, 243 winnie all of which are suitable for what I hunt. There are a few cartridges I would like to get a hold of to try out and I can see the appeal of rechambering a old mauser to a round that will out proform the orginal. I have hunted and shoot many magnums, but the appeal of them using up all my powder to do the same thing a standard round will do with less is not so appealing .. So I sold my one and only magnum I ever owned. I guess I am just to fruggle. I can not condone anyone from having a magnum but they have never appealed to me for what I intend to shoot.

I can see where rechambering an old mauser to 8x63 Sweed, like on the gentlemans web site, would be adventurous if I were in Sweeden and had access to hundreds of rounds of surplus ammo and no rifle to shoot it in might cause me to get creative like he did. I was thinking if I could not get my mauser to behave and shoot like I wanted I could rechamber it to 8mm/06 and keep the same barrel. For now though with it shooting 1 in. groups at 100 with the 185's I am in no hurry for this.

One magnum that stirs my interest would be the .308 Norma. possibly even one in .358 Norma would be fun to play with. most likly though I will never get one just because I can't justify the expense and don't have the need.

does anyone know which would be better for a 8mm/300winmag a M98 or a k kale38 turk? I have 4 barrels to work with . 1-29", 3-23.5" I also have a 8mm-06 in turk that I was thinking about using.

If I had a choice like that , I would Not use the K.Kale!! Actually I would think that a 8mm'06 in a K. kale would be the berries, but I wouldn't go to any larger diameter ctg personally. The large ring 98's on the other hand would be just fine with the larger diameter ctg!! HTH and have some fun!! I'm too recoil shy anymore for all that!! MV

This a late reply. instead of a 8mm/300winmag conceder a 8mm/338winmag (or 7mm remington open to 8mm)

the 30-338 was/is a great cartridge and the 8mm version would work great plus give you a little more neck to work with.

have fun....

There is already an 8mm-.300 win mag. I believe it was called the 323 Hollis. But, why mess with a wildcat when you can build an 8x68S? Factory ammo and brass, and dies are less.

If you had something chambered for a RUM it would be cool to have an 8mm Rum for sure but that would be harder to make work on a Mauser action.

The 8mm/338 win mag is a wildcat but an easyone and it is not a new one ether. Brass is very easy to make, ether open the neck on a 7mm rem or neck down a 338. The dies can be order pretty easy. 8x68s is a factory load but not all that common.

The whole point is to build something that both works and is a little differant.

Heck the easiest wildcat of them all is none other than a 8mm/06 which would be a 8mmX63.

 lefteyedom, thanks for the feedback. i've already built the 8-300wim mag. i used a m98 yugo, modified my 300mag reamer, made the chamber ,then done the throating with a8-06 reamer. tests were all positive. 150gr sierraspitzer out at 3558 with no excess pressure. my 180 nos bt were at 3347 average. i can with this rifle, take down and rebarrel to my 300win mag if needed. work great for me . i took some pics of the rifles i've built, will post them when i get it figured out.dave
