Birch Stock

Recommended Posts

I've been looking for a birch stock for a while, and finally found one that appeared to have some figure on eBay. When I got it, I ran it through the dishwasher to remove all the military finish. DW works well, but can crack thin woods, but it does wonders in steaming out dents. It turns out the stock had few dents, having never been issued or on a rifle.

Sanded the stock to 400, then used 4 coats of Teak Oil to finish it. Here are before, part way through, and finished pics.

Sailorman Several years ago I posted something about using the dishwasher to de-grease Mauser parts. I posted it after hearing it from another gun show buyer of J&G's Mausers. The buyer claimed his brother worked at one of the Scottsdale resorts and would put his Mausers through the commercial sized dishwasher.

After I posted something about using a dishwasher for parts that would fit inside a home unit. I was totally flamed big time. I remember one saying something about "I eat of dishes that are washed in my dishwasher" then rambled on about how disgusting it was.

In all honesty I've relied on my dishwasher for years to clean and degrease. I do run it empty at least two times afterward using bleach and a double dose of detergent the first run. Never made me or anybody else sick eating off dishes cleaned the same place as my Mauser parts.

Must not have been this board, Az. Dishwashers are great. I do car parts occasionally. My friend, a Army master gunner, used to clean AR parts in one. Just take whatever you're cleaning out promptly and oil it up.

Interesting on doing stocks, Sailorman. I would not have thought of that, and that one looks really nice.

Dishwashers are also perfect for degreasing prior to cold bluing. The dishwasher detergent coupled with hot water degreases better than any petroleum based solvent and does a better job in my experience than acetone or gasoline. I've read on the net but can't say it is fact. Heating up a metal surfaces like dishwashers do aids the cold bluing in penetrating the surface.

To any of you with a weak stomach, avoid the next sentence. I've also used my dishwasher to degrease my bullet molds I store packed with Vaseline. I place them cavity down in the silverware tray. After all like my moniker speaks, I am a Red Neck!!

Sailorman the picture has my curiosity sparked. What is the sharp pointed object sticking out the end of the gas tube??

Just a stray piece of metal that was lying on the boards, I never even noticed it, till you said something.
