Canik Pistols

From what I was told at a gun shop the Canik (pronounced Johnik) pistols are hot sellers. I had two. First one went back to the distributer for hang firing. Second one, the replacement for the dangerous junker worked well but I was offered a S&W 357 for it and jumped on it. Gun shop called it a poorman's Glock.

I learned from my experience with the first one Century Arms warranties are a joke. I spent several days on the phone trying to get a return authorization. The person that handles returns was never at his desk and return calls never come. After numerous attempts I finally got a woman on the phone claiming to be a manager. After I gave her the ser # she denied it was one of theirs and must have entered the country through another importer. She even claimed the CAI (Century Arms International) stamping was counterfeit.

Thanks to a guy named Bill at Centerfire Systems they agreed to exchange it for another of the same type. I had to eat the postage and FFL fees to return it. Centerfire gave me a back door number to Century and that's how I got the woman on the phone. Bill took it up with Centerfire's mgmt and got them to do the exchange. Bill's manager called me and when I told him of Century's claim that it was not their pistol. He made some remark about Century passing the buck on possible liability.

Cruising Youtube I discovered my problem with the hang fires was not an isolated incident. Debris in the de-cocking mechanism and firing pin was the blame. Had it worked I thought it was kind of a neat and unique safety system. Press the decock button with a live round in the chamber and the trigger automatically reverts to double action. Canik has since done away with it and replaced it with a silly system. Current models with the decock option, decocks but disengages the trigger. Totally useless in my mind as the slide after de-cocking needs to be racked.

The newer Caniks are getting good reviews, especially for reliability and having the look and feel of a Glock for about $330. My Canik from Centerfire came with two mags, holster and sight adjusting tool. At the time of purchase apx 18 months ago it cost 299 + 10 or so shipping and FFL fees. J&G is now pushing the newer models for about 330. J&G is known for removing the extra mags to undercut competition.

I really liked the handling characteristics of the Canik and am tempted to get another of the improved models. Getting a Glcck type handgun for nearly half the price is a bargain. I just don't want to line Century Arms pocket doing so. So now I have to decide what goes to generate the cash. What I really wish for are a return of the Slav Sig clones. I had one, gifted it to my nephew assuming I could get another for the then 299 price but it appears they have dried up and no indication of them returning.

Suddenly I feel better, venting away on my keyboard again. Guess it beats talking to my dog!! Hope you guys don't mind. http://www.jgsales.com/-m-377.html?fullsite=true

This is the last of the Sig clones, a 40 S&W with short barrel. I had a 9MM with a 4.5 inch barrel. http://www.centerfiresystems.com/HG3191-N.aspx

I've been eyeballing some of the Israeli surplus 9mm pistols that are on Gunbroker. Most are Browning High Power clones and I like the Arcus models made in Bulgaria, and they seem to have good reviews and are all metal with the heft for controlling +P loads. Most are going for $299.

Thanks for tie info Az. i really dont need a new 9mm but ...ya know : )

Spiris..If I did need a 9mm and still had a handy FFL, mine closed up shop, that Browning would be on the way. The History alone would recommend

it.

I think the supply of the Arcus 9s have dried up and don't know if more are on the way. I was really tempted to order one but I don't like relying on the net and pictures. Never did see one at a gun show. The Arcus 9 I read was adopted by the Iranian or Iraqi military and police. From what I read an author claimed the Arcus was an updated, modern version of the Browning Hi Power. It appears that metal framed pistols are on the way out except for the 1911. I'm simply not enthused about pistols without a manual safety or de-cock that puts it into double action mode.

I've heard and read all the hype especially in regards to Glock's so-called triple action safety. I'm extremely uncomfortable holstering and carrying an auto pistol with a live round in the chamber without a solid safety or de-cock. Probably all in my head as for some reason I don't have a problem holstering a revolver.

Karl I really don't need another 9MM but I'm always looking to add another to my collection.
