Nagant Carbine Bayonet

I'm starting to consider a Nagant project but I've made up my mind not to start another new project until I get my current ongoing Mauser projects complete. I have two of the Rusky carbines with the side folding bayonet. One of the carbines appears near virginal and I'm going to leave it alone. The other looks like it lost a fist fight in a Moscow bar room brawl. It shoots decent though with Bulgarian mil-surp ammo but can be a real pain in the rear at times to extract. Not enough accuracy to brag about but using one of Z's favorite phrases, suitable minute of deer accuracy. Accuracy could likely be drastically improved with hand loading.

I'm considering using the beater carbine for a project but was wondering. Have to admit after packing those Nagant triggers and seeing a way around the Nagant's obnoxious safety. It really sparked an interest. What does it take to remove the ugly piece from the barrel that the side folding bayonet attaches to?? How about scope mounting?? Does anybody make a decent no-gunsmithing mount, like one similar for the Mauser that goes in place of the rear sight??

I'm also anxiously awaiting range reports on the Nagant projects with the Timney triggers. Hopefully we'll get one this weekend. If those triggers break clean and crisp. I imagine the improvement on paper should be significant.

Mount:

Never tried, but $13 is cheap enough to play around with.

The screw that holds that bayonet in place is staked pretty good. I'm thinking that you either have to drill-out the screw or completely cut the mount off the sleeve. Hacksaw? Dremel tool with cutting disks?

It might be easier just to remove the whole bayonet/sight assembly:

I am in the process of sporterizing a nagant and this is the route I am taking less the bolt handle.

The ATI line of products seems to be ok. You will have to do alot of inletting work on the stock if you pop a Timney trigger in.

I am going to send the bolt out to get a longer bolt welded and swept for a nicer look.

Good luck and post some pics of progress.

Az, I've converted one of my two M44 to a sporter using an ATI Black syn. I did remove the bayonet bracket, which is pinned in two places. The pins are hard to see, with one vertical near the front sight and one horizontal back further on the barrel. I had to make a relief cut in the bracket along the barrel with my air grinder and used my arbor press to push it off.

If you follow Steve Wagner's page, you'll see it can be replaced with a piece of pipe. I cut the OD on my Mini-lathe and drilled the inside with a 9/16" bit. I made it shorter and allowed room to use the cut off old front sight with a pin and pressed it on the barrel.

I originally planned to scope it with a scout mount, but the scope ended up too high to use without a high cheek pad. Now it weighs a bit less, and is a quick handling powerful carbine with iron sights.
