What Happens When Whites Leave?

I saw white flight in a neighborhood I delivered mail. Guessing the phrase gerrymandering might be appropriate for school district boundaries. The grammar and middle school kids were not being properly educated because of the large number of students not being able to speak English. Whites began moveing out and within two years the area completely changed for the worse.

Rival gang activity, burglaries, car theft, sex crimes, drive bys, graffiti and white kids being beat up for being white. Affected me personally as mail theft, food stamps especially became a problem. I was tipped off by a bank employee I once dated Feds were looking into my finances. I broke up numerous fights mostly 2 or 3 kids beating up a white kid. My govt uniform got the attention of Mexican kids for some reason and they never challenged me physically. Teens a different story, I learned to call 911 as I did see teenage gangsters carrying guns or other weapons.

I had a small block I jokenly called The South American block. The area was mostly made up of South American immigrants from Chile, Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. I don't recall delivering any food stamps or welfare checks there. The majority worked in a nearby hospital. They all moved as well because their kids were being beat up, their houses and cars were often vandalized. Southeast Asians and Philapinos that moved in the area never stayed more than a few months.

Many of the white, South American and even a few black families desperate to sell their houses took it in the shorts as property values rapidly declined. Many houses that were vacated had homeless squatters move in. Scammers were taking rent deposits on vacant houses they didn't own. I called 911 once from my mail truck as I watched a near riot broke out as two families, victims of the scammers tried moving in at the same time.

I was in the area recently, drove through following the same path I delivered mail 10 years ago. With a few exceptions the area now looks like slums. It all started with a freeway dividing up the area, school boundaries changing and non English speaking students moving into a predominately white public school causing the white flight.

Phoenix?

Yes, in Phoenix. It was a lower middle class area. About half the frame homes were two bedroom one bath built in the early 70's. Most of the original residents were part of a R-219 program. Low income families had their house payment adjusted to thei income. I believe the program was for the first ten years. The two bedroom houses 1971 cost was in the low 20's. Central heating and air conditioning instead of an evaporative cooler with a cement driveway cost closer to 25.

During my time there off and on over 20 years. Several of the houses burned down. Aluminum wireing was usually the cause. Also during my time there, two murder suicides, a justifiable homicide, an unsolved murder and another death was suspected of being a mu der. Two skin heads that lived there beat a retarded teenager to death at a nearby pool hall.

An interesting detail about the area. Before it was part of Phoenix and just desert. The 50's tv show 26 Men was filmed there. The scenes in mountains were filmed a few miles south. Anybody remember the tv show?? It was syndicated throughout the southwest for 2 or 3 years but lasted for years in reruns in Arizona, California and Texas.
