karlunity
I went back to the doctor and it looks like they are going to remove a kidney. They did a scope bladder teat today...unpleasant..but the bladder is ok. the doc wanted to be sure. First time a blond ( his nurse) ever got that far without me even getting a kiss.. (Us Marines is just love objects for women) More tests Thurs and Fri but it looks like the operation is on...the sooner the better. karl soon to be about 2 lbs lighter
karlunity
The Hippy is worried about aids in the donated blood if I need a transfusion and we are going to look into donating mine (RBC 4.71) what do you guys think? Any idea of the time frame? karl
AzRednek
The Hippy is worried about aids in the donated blood if I need a transfusion and we are going to look into donating mine (RBC 4.71) what do you guys think? Any idea of the time frame? karl When I was assisting fed employees with health insurance claims. It was common if time permits to salvage your own blood. It is a question you need to ask your surgeon. During my treatment I received blood a few times from a blood bank. After questioning the Dr I felt fairly confident the blood was tested but I just don't recall what diseases it was tested for.
Dr.Hess
If you have the opportunity to donate your own blood to be used if you need it, definitely do that. I would be asking tomorrow. While the blood supply is clean as far as HIV goes, it is ALWAYS best if you don't need any blood and ESPECIALLY if you don't need anyone else's blood. Blood is tested for many diseases. The way I look at it, and I have pushed a lot of it because they would have been dead if I didn't, if you can do without a small risk you are then at zero risk. Zero is better than "small." I once cleaned out the entire Texas blood bank and started on the Louisiana blood bank. It was a busy week.
karlunity
Thanks guys I will check tomorrow. The doctor seems to think that there is some urgency, we want to remove the Kidney before this mass, hits class 3. It is 7.8 by 8.6 so I gather it is close. More scans tomorrow cat with contrast last with was cat with no contrast, and chest X ray. Lasix scan on Fri. So if it is confirmed and getting my own blood drawn wont delay his removing it, I shall , with his approval, have the blood taken care of. karl Gad.. any more "Scans" and my eyes are gonna glow in the dark!!!!! Sailormilan2
Have people you know and trust donate in your name. That will help. Here the local bank has about a 60 question list that one has to go through, and any "yes" could disqualify someone. I give about every 10 weeks, but last April I suspect I caught West Nile Virus, so I put myself on hold for 4 months, which is the blood bank's requirement for a Dr diagnosed case of West Nile. FC
That's funny about the blonde! Anyway, I doubt you'll need a transfusion. It's been a decade or more since I worked the floor, but back then it took at least two weeks to process your own blood. If I had a transfusion I would not be worried about HIV from the blood. I had an uncle die because of HIV transfusion, but that was WAY back before testing. Now the odds are 1:million, or less. They mention transfusion, just in case. AzRednek
I once cleaned out the entire Texas blood bank and started on the Louisiana blood bank. It was a busy week. During my time at the Post Office we were among the first to be solicited when the blood bank was in desperate need. Started during WW2 during which time fed employees were giving blood one or more times per month. Organized labor were also big donors. karlunity
Thanks sir. I tend to think that I am still 20 and hardcore..I get my self in trouble that way when it comes to PT. karl
Dr.Hess
You're going to feel like hammered dog poo for a while after that whack. If you can do PT now, a real good workout the day before the surgery is probably going to help you through the whole thing. There have been some studies showing that. Not enough to hurt you, but enough workout so that you would feel sore and tired the next day.
ken98k
I wish you speedy recovery! No offence to the doctors here but, I think it's better if you request not to have a transfusion. There are more problems with blood transfusions the just hiv. Google it. Besides, the doctor will be more careful if he knows he cant just pump in more blood. Dr.Hess
No offense to me, certainly, as I agree. I don't want to spook Karl (or especially The Hippy) so I won't go into that, but yeah, avoid that if possible. They also have a blood recycler machine available for really long bloody surgeries like huge multi-level spine work. However, I don't think this should be that bad, especially if it is still within the confines of the kidney. If it had grown outside the capsule, then that can get messier. Sorry if this is TMI. Marines should be able to take it, right?
karlunity
Not a problem..i done bled before.. As i see it the Doctor went to Medical school not I. I will ask him about this but unless he tells me something I KNOW to be wrong. It is his field not mine. karl Went for a lasex gamma ray test results Monday. karl
karlunity
Well the tests are done..just waiting on Monday ..I would think tuesday at the latest for the doctors to review them and give me the word. Then perhaps into the Hospital Wednesday if required and done by Friday. karl Question: I go to the VA every Nov and they take urine tests. The Nov 14 report said nothing about blood in urine. I would think that if the kidney were that screwed up, there would be some trace of blood in Nov. I am NOT repeat Not trying to blame or fault the VA in any way. I think them very fine people and doctors. But I am curious. karl
FC
I'm not surprised there's no blood in the urine. Anyway, you Marines are more terrified of needles than Army, Navy, and Air Force! Big 'ol Marines in Hawaii were like little boys when I came at them to draw blood.

Not enough to hurt you, but enough workout so that you would feel sore and tired the next day. That's good advice Doc. During my initial chemo treatments I was spending 3 to 4 weeks in the hospital. My Oncologist recommended physical therapy before and in between hospital stays. After I maxed out the PT benefit I went on long walks and lucked into a used exercise bike. It was hard mentally to get started on the exercise bike but it seemed to me even if it was only in my head. Once I felt my heart rate climb and started breathing at a more rapid rate. My ability to concentrate and mood really improved. The aches, pains and best of all the nausea were all greatly reduced. Good physical therapists are hard to find. Way to many moochers using PT as a way to jack up the medical bills in a 3rd party claim. PT is also used by some as a way to get their health insurance to pay for massages or no or low cost use of the exercise and weight lifting equipment. I finally connected with a good therapist on a referral from an Orthopedic surgeon. Prior I was going down my insurance co's PPO list. I had to make a $16.00 vs free co-payment but I connected with a guy that is very goal oriented.
Dr.Hess
Also, pig out on the food before the surgery. In fact, I would suggest you start eating everything you can get your hands on right now, up to the "nothing by mouth after midnight" order pre-surgery. Anything you want and all you can eat. You'll lose it post-whack.
karlunity
Sept 16 is the DAY...The hippy and I would've preferred it this week. Get on the phone and order up a double cheese pizza with plenty of Italian sausage, pepperoni and onions or take Mrs Hippy out and treat yourself to a heavy duty grilled sandwich piled high with corned beef and swiss. No need to drive past the Dairy Cream or Tastee Freeze anymore. There are large chocolate milkshakes and root beer floats awaiting you. Tomorrow, think about a huge plate of pork ribs and baked potato smothered in butter and sour cream. Forget the green salad, instead have a large bowl of Oreo ice cream topped with Hersheys for desert.

AzRednek
I know its tough eating right but I have to cheat at least once a week. On cheat day its either a artery clogging double cheese pizza or a grilled Rueben or Pastrami sandwich with a large handful of fries and plenty of ketchup. Tonight it was two real mayo drenched BLT's. There was some left over bacon I thought I'd sneak tomorrow morning or a late night snack but my wife gave it to my dog.
