Noisy Marines!

It must be Karl's fault. Curiosity got the best of me today. There were a bunch of fighter jets flying directly over my house and about a 1/4 mile east they banked right and headed back toward Luke AFB.

After watching a huge and I do mean huge low flying prop plane bank right. Then out of nowhere two fighters pulled right up on its ass. I have a mountain apx a 1/4 east and I guess they were probably using it as a land marker. I also noticed commercial airlines flying into Sky Harbor were approaching from the east, normally from the west.

I also watched a couple of low flying fighters play for the lack of a better phrase, cat and mouse. One would fly over head a bit slow then another came screaming in out of nowhere. The slow poke surprisingly turned on his after burners flying away like a bat out of hell.

I just had to know what was going on as Luke air traffic rarely flies over the city. A woman answering the phone as LT XX. Said this is Marine week. Marines train and fly at lower levels than A/F and Navy. I asked why they weren't using Yuma, an Arizona Marine air base just north of the Mexican border instead of the Phoenix metro area. I got dead silence and no response.

My guess the reason for no answer. If the fighters flew aggressively near the border. The Mexican govt would get their panties in a bunch. I didn't insist on an answer because I knew the gal might get into trouble. Years ago according to local news reports. An A/F officer got a demotion and a civilian employee got the boot. It was during the so-called Lights Over Phoenix situation. Luke sent fighters to intercept but denied doing so. The two apparently told phone callers while the lights were still visible. Jets were being scrambled but didn't know why. The next day in a news release Luke denied any planes taking off.

Anyhow if Karl can assure me his buds will do another show. I'll be spending time in the back yard tomorrow. I tried to take some cell phone pics but they didn't turn out. I'll bring my camera tomorrow.

In my imagination but I bet the Marine pilot yelled out a very loud OOOOO RAH as he fired up the after burners. Karl see if you can put in a good word for me and have the fighters fly a bit lower tomorrow.

They started flying again but have changed course and are not flying over my house. I'm sure they are generating complaints as I watched a pair make a U-turn over a shopping mall apx 3/4 of a mile west of my house. They didn't kick in the after burners but rather loudly accelerated.

Unfortunately Luke AFB is adjacent to Sun City Az. The largest retirement community in the country. The old fogies have nothing better to do than complain about the noise. When I hear the jets over head it makes me feel secure.

Several years ago a bunch of fogies organized and raised hell about two jets flying over their homes. They approached the media, wrote numerous letters to the editor and constantly called radio talk shows. They called the pilots cowboys, GI Joe and other similar disparaging remarks. Turned out the jets were doing a funeral fly over for a Medal of Honor recipient. Currently Sun City fogies have to sign off in a home purchasing agreement about the Luke AFB noise but they still constantly complain.

Doc most of the shooting I'm aware of are in a gang infested area. That part of town the billboard advertising is in Spanish. Personally I'm leaning toward a gang ritual. Like a punk earning his facial teardrop tattoo. Still can't rule out the sand man but my gut feeling is they'd opt for something scarier. Whomever could travel a few more miles west to the nuke plant if they wanted to create some real terror.

One can only speculate on what we hear from the media. After hearing about school buses way east, as far away as Scottsdale. Having their routes diverted away from freeways. I assume there is more to it than they are telling us. "They" meaning local police. Far as I know, no comments so far from FBI, DHS or any feds.

One thing I find puzzling. Local news reports are saying they are not sure it is bullets. One news report said it could be another kind of projectile but police are not saying other than being uncertain. All my cop buds are now retired so I can't get any inside info.

The only thing positive that I have not heard so far. Nobody's blaming hunters or target shooters for stray bullets.

Gotta admit the Marines put on a much better show than the flyboys and sailors. Years ago my boss' son was a Navy pilot instructor. I recall over hearing him piss and moan to his parents about teaching Marine pilots to land on an aircraft carrier. He said something about them being either fearless or crazy.

What's happening out there with that freeway shooter? I've been over that stretch of I10 too many times myself.

Two teenagers with slingshots were arrested. According to local media they were shooting at windshields off of a freeway overpass. Earlier this weekend local TV news said a suspect was in custody but police off the record were saying he is not the guy. TV and radio is still issuing warnings asking motorists to report any suspicious activity.
