  1. No problem! Yes, polyurethane can be removed. Use any remover containing methylene cloride. There is probably a wax buildup on the finish preventing the remover from working. Simply rough up and de-gloss the finish with fine sandpaper or steel wool. The finish will peel in layers so you may have to do it twice. For the checkering, use an old toothbrush to clean the grooves to prevent damage. Clean up with denatured alcohol or turpentine.
