Mauser To 222 Or 223

I've done it before, but it is a lot of work (sometimes not sucessful). You can buy an oversize extractor from Brownell's and file it to fit the smaller case head. And there are ways to shorten the mag well for the shorter cartridge. These are two of the things that need to be done.

As for me, I'd just buy a new rifle in that caliber. They are out there, at less cost than what you may end up paying to alter a mauser. And then you would have a new rifle, barrel, etc.

I'm working on a 223 now. I used a Ruger Mini-14 magazine for feeding. I got an oversized extractor and am having a bolt face welded to clean up to 223 head diameter.

Lots of work but I needed another impossible project to do.

thank you.do you have to reheat the bolt to do this. and dose ruger clip work how thanks the coyote

Have to and should are two different things. Depends on the welding, how hot did the lugs get? I would get it heat treated no matter what for safety. Cheap price to pay for the insurance.

Rod froze the bolt in a can of water with just the face sticking out and welded around the face. He said he could handle the lugs right after welding, so I don't think heat was an issue.

The Mini-14 magazines have feed lips built in so they feed very well. I made a plastic block to fit in front of the magazine in the well to kep it from rocking and it hold pretty tight.

I did find that different brands of mags have a different sized catch block on the front for the ruger mag release and are different sizes. Some wouldnt fit with the plastic block sized for the smaller catchblock.

I may rig up some sort of a spring loaded gizmo for holding tension on different sized blocks.
