I was thinking about having known you through this site for about half of you military career. Mostly I was wishing I was young enough to re-up. I wish I was young enough to do close order drill all afternoon and then drink beer and about it all night. I wish I could run 2 miles to the rifle range, then fire prone and make hits from the 600 meter firing line. I was thinking about signing out at midnite to go on terminal leave, then throwing my od green baseball cap complete with e-4 insignia, at the MP when I went through the Muldraugh gate for the last time. Â I'm running 4 1/2 hours each way to get to and from Benning to finish out-processing, and do stuff at home. I have to drive back early in the morning to Benning, do some junk, then come back to take care of the dogs (wife is in KY). Then go back Thursday night to final (I hope) out-process Friday. I make it to Augusta today for my former boss's going away. Lots and lots of driving. Soon it will be over. Finding a job that's in my specialty, at the right pay, has been a real chore. Nothing yet. FC Posted May 1, 2015 Author Report Share Posted May 1, 2015 My wife hates snow and cold, so that counts out a lot of places. Having a house and a lot of stuff sure locks one down. We have a couple big antique/flea booths where we can sell our stuff, but it takes time. I'm thinking about living in a RV till retirement, and maybe after that go full-time RV, but will likely just be a part-timer. Jobs are awful slow to post on USAJobs. Personally, I'd rather work for civilians, but there's nothing in my line of work around here, apparently. 0.8% of hospitals have a chief nursing informatics officer. That number will go up, but slow to happen. Informatics jobs are out there, here and there, but mainly don't pay like they should, and they want Cerner, Epic, or Allscripts experience. There have been a few times in my working career I was forced to take undesirable jobs to keep the bills paid. The dirtiest, greasy most horrible job I ever had was a forklift mechanic. I had to take it to continue eating and feeding five others. Every night I'd come home, shower off and shampoo out the hydraulic oil and literally pray one of my resumes were answered. I had to swallow my pride for several months before finally getting a response. Seemed like I just settled into the new job and was asked to relocate out of state. I knew the wrting was on the wall after I declined the offer to move. There was no longer a market for service station equipment like tire changers, pneumatic lifts tune-up scopes etc. The days of the mom'n'pop franchised service station ended with Carter's oil shortage. Guess that's how I wound up back with the Post Office. No longer having a marketable skill. The PO at the time paid more than most unskilled labor jobs and it only takes passing a test demonstrating having a better than average memory to get hired. Â Guess the point I'm trying to make. Be patient but don't give up. Having a marketable skill, being educated and a retired military officer. Gives you a one-up and a huge advantage on a young person just entering the workforce. I'm sure sooner or later and hopefully sooner. You will get the call. If your antique business will keep food on the table and the lights on. Kick back and enjoy yourself in the meantime. Â If you have the spare bucks. Get the RV and travel until it is no longer enjoyable. I did it for nearly two months, bouncing from on KOA to the next. It does eventually wear you down but it will give you a chance to see things you may never have the time or good health to do so in the future. FC Posted May 1, 2015 Author Report Share Posted May 1, 2015 One interviewer told me I was over-qualified. My military pay is $40,000 more than many jobs pay. You have to list your pay online for applications. Some people don't like military, some think you'll want to boss, some won't like my age, & some my hearing aids. Some of those really crappy jobs cost me hearing. Working inpatient floors still gives me nightmares of being behind on time. At least I'll have a decent pension. Antiques don't bring much money, but it's productive work. I'd hate to see the per hour pay. Well, today is my last day in uniform. It's been a long road. karlunity Posted May 1, 2015 Report Share Posted May 1, 2015 I found that many places, to my surprise, did not like the USMC and while they wanted experience, they preferred to hire the new guys as they were cheaper and far more easy to control or as they put it "more team oriented". One PS Principle offered me three times what I was getting till I told her I don't mark on the group. While I would accept group work as part of the grade, it would not be the majority of the grade. She told me that she saw that as 'Old thinking and not factoring in the reality of the disadvantaged' I told her that thinking like hers was why 30 years AFTER school integration we still had disadvantaged. A person must learn to stand on their own two feet and most can. She did not hire me!! Â Last time I was in Gilbert Az it was a feed store, gas station and numerous farms. Used to be known world wide for the excellent dove hunting. Dizzy Dean and other celebrities would fly in and land on an old WW2 emergency air strip. Two years ago it was the fastest growing area in the country and no where one can hunt anymore. I'm just going to move on. Tanglewood- that's a lot of years! I've got 26 1/2, counting reserves. It felt odd driving home knowing this is the last day I would wear the uniform.
