38 or 9mm derringer?

I went back to running and my carry pistol a PPH 380 is a bit annoying to carry while running. I am thinking of something small and light.
I have seen a derringer in .38 and another 9mm?
of the two what do you think?

9MM if you going to use factory ammo, 38 if you're going to load your own. If you're going to be carrying and running in a public park, firearms and or weapons may be prohibited. If it is the case get some "Dog Spray" usually available where postal uniforms are sold. Still a weapon but the dog part might give you an out for carrying a prohibited weapon. Similar to many on the left coast that carried "Bear Spray" in campgrounds.

Ever shoot a Derringer? I have. I've shot a 38. Now, I'm not claiming to be the world's greatest pistol shot, but I do OK. I can hit a 8.5x11 sheet of paper at 100 yards standing with a 22LR handgun. Basically the 100 yard target for hunter pistol. With the 38 Derringer, I would say that the maximum range I could hit, say, a 5 gallon bucket with is about 5 feet. So, I would suggest something besides a derringer. Either a lighter/smaller 380, a 32 or even (shock) a 25. Or the little Beretta or Taurus clone tilt up 22LR's. If you can't hit a target, the gun isn't going to do a whole lot of good, besides scaring away factor.

I carry a 38 Derringer. I like the small size but the accuracy is not so good.

My other carry is a XD40. It is bigger but has several more rounds.

The Derringer fits in my pocket and I forget that it's there.

I tend to agree with Doc. A pea shooter capable of putting multiple holes in somebody would be more effective that all the stopping power, penetration etc etc hype. Unless the bad guy is extremely intoxicated, meth heads especially. A hole or two with blood draining out will usually end it. Most people with their brain intact will fall when shot in an act of submission. According to a FBI study I read. The bad guy falls as a way to end the shooting in hopes you don't drill anymore holes in him. 38 full or semi wadcutters will usually inflict the most pain especially if it hits bone like the pelvis, sternum or ribs. If the bad guy is so stoned he can't feel pain and continues to attack. A face or head shot is about the only way to stop him.

Just showing a gun will often end a bad situation. A bad guy might not think the Derringer is a toy and not a real gun. Years ago I carried a Derringer as a back-up. The FIE brand Derringer unraveled on me. For some reason both barrels let loose at the same time damaging the top hinge.

I have a 38 derringer and it is definitely a 5 feet or less gun. I also have a North American Arms 22

revolver that would be my choice if I were to take up jogging. It is very easy to forget you're carrying

it. Recently I almost put it in the washing machine.

My raven Arms .25 auto would be my second choice. A Beretta 25 would be even better.

The North American in both 22 RF and Mag are now being made with swing out cylinders. The three extra shots could be important in an attack. The swing out cylinder would save considerable time if a quick reload was needed. When I had my FFL in the 80's I could buy Raven 25's for $19.95 + shipping, even less in quantities. At the time replacement firing pins were 6.95 each. The firing pins were more than just prone to breakage, it was almost a sure thing.

My personal preference is a Beretta 32 but I rarely carry it without something a bit more potent using the 32 as a back-up. It has been through the washer twice now. Fortunately it was discovered before going in the dryer with a live round in the chamber.

Here is a deal on a small hide-out gun. Only 219 + shipping and FFL fees. 9 or 10 shots and not much larger than a Derringer.

I'm still an Old School type and would prefer the extra bucks for the model with a manual safety especially if used for pocket carry without a holster.

Karl you can always follow that Colorado politician's advice. Can't recall her name but she told a college student a gun wouldn't prevent her from being raped on campus. Instead she recommended the student urinate on her attacker. Don't need a Derringer I guess as long as you're packing your main vein, just piss on the bad guys!! And hope he ain't packing a knife :o

CDNN is currently having a sale on pocket holster. About 5 bucks I think.

Karl do you have a particular Derringer brand in mind?? I believe a company named Bond makes a pretty sturdy one capable of chambering the 45 Colt or 410. Never having shot one I imagine one would need some heavy duty grip strength. After my experience with the cheapie copy of the mid-1800's Remington. You may want to avoid one of low quality.

I have a Derringer type safe queen. A single shot 22LR. It is a copy of an 1800's Colt. Came to me many years ago as part of a multi-gun swap. Don't believe I've shot it more than 4 or 5 times. At best as a weapon. It would only be good for a self defense weapon at very close knife fighting range, about 5 yards max or could be used as a so-called drop gun.

I have one of the SCCY 9mms too. If you get one, get the model without a safety. Mine won't stay on safe anyway.

Odies Dad how reliable has your SCCY been?? Is there a problem with the safety not staying positively in place?? I almost acquired one in a trade but it appeared to have been pocket carried, rust cleaned off and the surface waxed. A lesson I learned years ago. Sweat and humidity in a pocket is hard on blue steel. Currently I only pocket carry stainless or my Taurus Titanium 38 to avoid rust. I searched You Tube before meeting up and all I saw were glowing revues. I can recall one review highly recommending using lightweight bullets to soften the snappy recoil.

The SCCY 9MM's show up often here in Phx on Backpage leading me to suspect a problem with reliability. A nearby gunshop salesman told me the SCCY 9MM is one of their best sellers. At the time apx 6 months ago I could have bought the model with the safety, CPX-1 model I think. Out the door for 266. If I recall correctly about 10-15 less for the CPX-2 model without the safety.

My SCCY is fairly reliable. My only real complaint is that the safety doesn't have enough of a detent to stay where you put it.

The trigger pull is fairly hefty as are most pistols. That is your real safety.

It is small and inexpensive. That is what I wanted. It is not the quality of a Kimber or such, but for the price?
