Lyman + Scope , Can It Be Done?

My latest acquisition came with a Lyman site.

With my sight, I need a scope for anything beyond 75 yards.

I'm wondering if I can keep the Lyman and add a scope.

I don't know if I would like a swing over.

I have a side mount and if it is typical of other side

mounts the clearance isn't there either.

It would seem that the only other possibility would be a

scout mount with see through rings.

Any other thoughts or ideas???

Thanks!!

This was a very common setup in years gone by. A lyman 48 and a G&H sidemount. Other similar sidemounts were used and often gave plenty of clearance with high enough rings. Another option was to remove the slide from the sight when mounting the QD scope. This allowed use of lower rings. That's also why its fairly common to find older rifles with Lyman sights missing the elevation slide. Lyman even used to make a filler slide for when the original was removed.

I can't tell where the scope is in that photo.

Is it over the center line of the gun or over the left side?

The one side mount that I have forms an inverted ' L ' such

that the scope hangs over the center line of the gun.

I didn't think about it when I wrote my post, but when I saw your

photo it occurred to me that if scope were actually mounted over the

left side it could work out.

Thanks

Here's the off side. It's mounted over the centerline. As I said, most often, you used the lyman quick detach feature on the sight to remove the slide. Often they were stored in a trapdoor butttplate.

You could mount the scope so it was off to the side or like the Germans who seemed to like real high rings.
