Removing Finish?

Hi, I have a rifle stock that I want to refinish. It has a varnish type finish on it. I used paint & varnish remover on it & it did nothing. I`m thinking it might be polyurathane. I`m told that nothing will touch it if it is. Is there anything out there that will without having to sand it off? I really don`t want to sand a lot because it`s checkered. Thanks in advance.

Is it one of the Remington's from the '70s?

No problem! Yes, polyurethane can be removed. Use any remover containing methylene cloride. There is probably a wax buildup on the finish preventing the remover from working. Simply rough up and de-gloss the finish with fine sandpaper or steel wool. The finish will peel in layers so you may have to do it twice. For the checkering, use an old toothbrush to clean the grooves to prevent damage. Clean up with denatured alcohol or turpentine.
