I have several small ring 98`s that I want to rebarrel to 45/70. Has anyone had experience with this type of alteration before. I would appreciate some imput on,Extrator, bolt face, feed ramp, and rail alteration, as well as the follower and magazine box. Thanks Bill

What SR 98 do you have?

For what it's worth and IMHO large cartridges on the SR 98's is a waste. they build up into such nice liteweight rifles that burdening them with large barrels seems a waste. Additionally, the conversion to rimmed cartridges is very extensive requiring a new mag box built with a slant, extensive opening of the boltface and alteration of the extractor to feed the rimmed cartridges. Not to mention extensive feed rail work. The Siamese mauser is a much easier platform to start with. It already has all these mods and just needs to be tweaked.

Wanna trade?

Thanks for the offer. I have built several of the siamese, and even some Enfields in 45/70, I was never that attached to them.. I like the looks of the small rings . I have enough 257 Ackleys, 22.250`s, 280 Ackleys even a 6.5 06, and a 338 06. I have even turned out a couple of standard 98`s in 404 Jeffery with a few major alterations. I am not afraid of the work, I have a particular result in mind with these three rifles. They will be European style sporters with the slimest contour barrel I can aquire. Straight combs, schanbel forend, iron sights. Thanks Bill

I have 14 1910 mexican mausers that are left from one of my better trades. Bill

Better trades? Dang! What did you trade?

You could do this conversion but be prepared to build your own bottom metal. Why the .45-70? A far simpler conversion would be the .450 Marlin. Even simpler still is the Siamese. Don't get me wrong, I like the .45-70, a lot.

By the way, welcome!

An early model Colt 1911, for twenty rifles. They were all in bad shape but I was only intrested in the actions and they were alright.

You guys play big-time. I am a mouse amongst giants. I hope I get this involved while there are still surplus guns around.

It is just luck and being in the right place at the right time. Any deal that you are satisfied with is a good deal. Bill

Chance favors the prepared mind! Try to set aside a little money here and there for a new Mauser or two and keep your eyes open. This is the approach I took 14 rifles ago; it will really surprise you what you'll find when you're on the look out. Just be patient!

The key to shrewd trading is accumulating trading material. If you spot a good buy on any gun especially handguns jump on it. I have several in my vault, that as far as I'm concerned are like money in the bank accumulating interest, awaiting a trade. Guns always stay a step ahead of inflation. Catagory specific collectors, especially military and non-collectors wanting a handgun, will almost always trade down or include cash with the deal. Common shotguns, 30/30's and 22's make poor bartering material. If you ever sell a car with a want-ad, add a line "trade for guns considered". Somebody desperatly needing wheels might show up with a few guns to get the price down. Be carefull of the deal that is to good to be true, it might be hot. One hot gun in your collection could lead to the entire cache being confiscated.
