257 Small Ring Barrel

Years ago two builders I knew never paid much for barrels at gun shows saying it most likely came from a project they lost interest in. One of the builders, a real scrounger having the ability to beat everybody way down on price often insulting them in the process. He carried around Shotgun News ads to use in his negotiations.

The price will depend a lot on who made it. Adams and Bennett(Midway), are usually at the bottom of the price list, though that does not mean they aren't good barrels. ER Shaw are next up the list, then Shilen. A&B barrels used to go for about $80, with Shaw barrels being about double that, and Shilen being about triple the cost of a A&B barrel.

Also, A&B had different contours. They had a lightweight barrel, only 21" long, and their standard 24" barrel, which was a little heavier than most standard barrels.

You might also run into converted Remington 700 barrels, which are about the only commercial barrel that can be rethreaded properly to fit a small ring action.

The barrels are all shaped differently, so it makes it somewhat easy to figure out who made them.

If you don't find what you are looking for, you might check out ER Shaw. They want about $180 for a barrel, chambered and threaded for your action. I've got large ring Mauser 98 barrel in .257 that I found on eBay. I don't know how it shoots yet, as I am still working on it. .257 Roberts barrels don't last long anywhere.

I've had good luck with Shaw Barrels. Got two from them, 338 and 458 Win Mags. I haven't done much with the 458, only shot 10 rds of factory 500gr to set the irons. Mostly shoot mild home cast slugs using 45/70 data. The 338 I sent a Santa Barbra mag action to Shaw and let them install it. Took about 30 shots to settle in and it now shoots excellent groups at 200 yards. Like the 458 once the recoil gets to me I begin flinching badly and both barrels shoot much better than me. Shaw's blueing is good and best I recall the price was right.

If the budget and boss will permit it without a week or two of the silent treatment. I have a CZ BRNO Mauser McGowen barreled 35 Whelen. Did back in the good old days when I had some spare toy money. The 35 is will shoot clover leaf single hole groups at 200 yards shooting bench rested off of sandbags..I opted for the cyro frozen premium barrel and it needed no break in.

I appreciate the Input.

I dislike Shaw's Web site that is for sure...Price is OK...I think...Hard to navigate!!!

Unless you have a Savage, Remington, or 10/22, and just want to send it in!!!!

I think I will continue searching out a Take-Off... What's another 10 years or so!!!!!

Shaw was and possibly still marketing barrel kits for Savage/Stevens. Came with barrel wrench, go and no go gauges. I got the Savage kit being closed out at Sportsman's Warehouse along with a $20.00 off coupon for them screwing up a previous order. Selling off the wrench and gauges on Ebay nearly covered the cost of the entire kit. If you talk with them you might ask if they sell the kits for Mauser barrels.
