I was a History and Constitution teacher for 25 years and based on that experience, I can say that that test if it covers the right material, is a fine idea. It requires that the students learn FACTS and facts are required for understanding. As for it taking a period to administer so what? There are 180 of them in the school year.

I always assumed it was law. I can recall having to pass the test before I graduated. There was an exemption for special ed and students taking decelerated classes. Best I recall the test I took twice as I got booted out second semester of my senior year was pretty simple. Students that failed were given an opportunity to take an after school class until they passed.

EDIT: Now that I think back. Believe we were told it was mandated by the school district. The test also included some very simple questions on geography, the draft, drinking and liquor law.

Karl your post got me thinking about that test I took. The most commonly missed multiple choice question was to select the three main branches of the federal govt. Beside the three correct, executive, judicial and legislative. There were two more selections, one being military and I just can't recall the fifth. Military being the incorrect answer most commonly selected.

A few years prior to my taking the test. There was a fill in the blank question answered by writing in missing portions of the Pledge of Allegiance that was removed. My civics teacher, a retired AF bird Colonel and pilot, told my class. The question was removed for religious reasons but he refused to elaborate. Probably my first lesson in life regarding political correctness.

Karl if you can, could you please send me a link about the test. The test I was required to pass was pretty simple. Pretty sure I aced it the second time, missing only one the first. I was a marginal student, satisfied with just passing and never seriously hit the books.

If anybody has watched the Water's World portion of O'Reilly, especially when he is on or near a college. I'm simply amazed that college students can be so totally ignorant of how our government works and US history.

THX!! Karl. I missed one, author of the Declaration of Independence. I thought it was Ben Franklin or possibly he wrote another historical document. If I recall my history correctly. Franklin was supposed to have had very neat handwriting. My high school test if I recall correctly was 100 questions and a score of at least 60% was needed to graduate.

The one I made and gave had either 50 or 100 depends...if you wanted to go the big dance..90% was required..Principal said 75 was passing but I ran that dance. 8 graders are mad to dance...every one studied and as the class as a whole needed dance points the GIRLS..who actually run the social life in JH made sure that everybody passed. : ) Peer pressure made them study their heads off.
