30-06 To 308

Saw a barrel for sale that has been rechambered from '06 to 308. I had thought that this left the possibility of a "ring" in the chamber. How would one determine if a ring exists, short of mounting, firing, and measuring the case?? Any ideas? Thanks.. MV

Chamber cast.

Duh??? Is that what that cerrosafe I have is for??? My poor abused brain aint in gear!!

Now Is there a method, like w/ a paperclip as done w/ a ctg. when checking for incipient head separation?? You know something a guy can do on site at the show or wherever?? Thanks.. MV

If the barrel was recut from .30-06 to .308, it was cut back and rethreaded. The .308 is a half inch shorter than the '06. That would probably take care of any shoulder issues. The problem would be the reverse situation where someone tried to lengthen a .308 to make a .30-06.

And yes, a Cerrosafe cast of the chamber would be a good idea no matter what.

I would not doubt that it may be a us mil. barrel, [springfield perhaps, not 1917] I will try to "see" an insert. Having never heard of such a device, could you elaborate , or drop a link?? Thanks. MV

I don't know alot about them, sorry I don't have a link and haven't seen one for many years. They hit the Shotgun News surplus market in the early to mid 70's. Best I recall they were used by or expermented with by the US Navy after the US adopted the 7.62. I bought a pos National Ordnance Tankers Garrand in the 70's that was caliber stamped 308 Win (not 7.62) and a gunsmith discovered the spacer and it was easily removed with a broken shell extractor. A guy I used to shoot with on one outing used the spacer that came out of my M-1 in his 03 Springfield and M-1. The cheap 7.62 Spanish surplus ammo we used had a tendancy to hang up in the M-1 but a couple of clips US GI 7.62 functioned fine. I gave him the spacer and he was going to try milling it down to use 7.62 in 7.65 Argys. I don't know if he ever followed through.
