GA1dad
Well, I made my first bolt handle this weekend. Got it welded on (actually tacked on for fitting). It functions. After I put the pin and spring in, it dry fired as it was supposed to. But in tinkering with it, somehow I've gotten the safety out of sync. As long as I've had the gun (my first and only mauser) it fired when the safety was in the right hand position. But now it only fires when it's all the way left. I'm sure I've simply got something out of whack, but try as I may, I can't figure it out. Secondly, when I cut the old bolt off I was scared to get the stem too short. But now it seems to sit off the stock a little too much I think. Do the stocks that you guys get from Microfit come any wider than the military stock? If it will be a little wider, my bolt will work OK.
GA1dad
Maybe I'm losing it???? I just ran across an old picture of the gun and it is in the uncocked position with the safety all the way left.
Racepres
Now ya did it!!! I gotta share this w/ ya! Once I was "test fitting" a bolt in a stripped, barreled receiver. Somehow!! A round got into the chamber!! [Darn Gremlins] Now I'm lookin 'er over and thinks to meself... The safety goes this way to lock the bolt... or is it this way... BANG!!!! Holy SHITE Batman I got a big hole in the house!!!!My ears is ringin... I just proved I am Bubba!! I did however remember to not be pointing at anything I was not willing to destroy... Would rather not have a bullet hole at the juncture of ceiling and wall... to the outside world [pasture]... but... Sorry. I just had to share BTW Now I always test fit w/o the guts in the bolt, unless necessary... Then I try to aim at that already damaged spot... LOL MV
GA1dad
Well after sleeping on it, I still feel like something is out of synch. I know that the gun will fire with the safety to the right. I'm positive that it was working that way when I first screwed the assembly back together yesterday afternoon. Come on guys, surely I can't be the first to run into this???
metzgeri
If your safety is the original one, left is fire, straight up is for unloading/dissasembling the bolt and right is safe. Here is a '96 model with safety in the ready/fire position: metzgeri
gun nutty
Are you sure that the shroud is screwed in ALL of the way? I've re-assembled before, and the shroud was one turn short.

montea6b
Guess I've just lost it?????? No, you lost it when you thought it fired with the safety to the right... Now you're getting it back! As you can see, there's really only one way to install the safety and you can tell whether it's blocking the cocking piece or not just by looking at it in each position. BobVZ
Is it possible you have a Peruvian Mauser which was made with a reversed safety mechanism? Safe would be left and fire would be right.
metzgeri
Well all be darned, BobVZ, I learned sumptin' new!! I never heard of a reversed safety on a mauser, but here's what I found: ...the F.N. produced Modelo 1935. This rifle, in 7.65x53mm, introduced the reversed wing safety. To place on safe you must rotate it to your left, the exact opposite of all other Mauser military rifles and carbines known to me... from this site: http://www.carbinesforcollectors.com/peru.html And the way it was explained on that site (so that marksman could take a sight picture with their cheek clear up on the cocking piece without raming their nose with the safety) is ludicrous...but hey, to each their own. Thanks for the insight. metzgeri
Racepres
Is it possible you have a Peruvian Mauser which was made with a reversed safety mechanism? Safe would be left and fire would be right. Didn't think of all that!!! Long as ya don't put no holes in the gun room .... I am confident you will get it!!! P.S. I can't believe no one thinks that story is as funny as my bitter half thinks it is!!! Then again... she may have a motive
