Gun Show

I breezed through our semi-annual gunshow yesterday and was not so surprised to see lots of gun powder for sale.

In past years you never really saw much powder at these shows because it could be purchased cheaply at several places around town. Now that it is again becoming available, the hoaders are coming out of the woodwork trying to unload their surplus stocks of it.

Gun prices where very high, one guy was asking $500 for Yugo mausers. I see many of the same

over-priced guns year after year at these shows, I think the sellers just enjoy the association with other gun people and are not serious about selling. There was lots of ammo for sale but I didn't check the prices nor did I see anyone buying it.

I got away cheap. I only bought a couple books and an Old Hickory butcher knife.

I believe you're right about the socialization aspect of gun show sellers. At 500 for a Yugo he only has to sell one to pay for the show and make a very handsome profit. I quickly breeze by many sellers before finding one that is serious in selling merchandise.

Reloading components, handgun powders and brass especially are basically priced at rip-off prices. Common fired brass like 38 Special, 45ACP and 9MM are reasonable but cartridges like 45 Colt or 44 Mag is ridiculous. I watched a guy pay a buck a piece for once fired 44-40 brass. I keep telling myself I need to get on the other side of the tables. If ATF hadn't taken my FFL I could be making a killing.

I doubt it. I had a few record keeping violations. Didn't make any difference after reporting the loss of my records due to a house fire. When they showed up for an audit and I had no records. I was given the choice of voluntarily surrendering my FFL or go through a lengthy hearing process. I was also in trouble for no longer having a sales tax license. My uniform business folded and I took the FFL to my home address. A mis-delivery by UPS caused me some problems. The UPS driver forged my signature and dropped a package by a door of a vacant house. ATF dropped it after discovering the rifles were pre-98 Martini's but never the less noted it as a violation. UPS denied it, claiming the parcels were properly delivered. After Clinton was elected ATF harassed many home based FFL's out of business, me included.

In a previous audit after I sold numerous Brazilian surplus Smith and Wesson 45ACP revolvers. All revolvers had three sets of numbers stamped on the frame. Unsure of the correct serial number I recorded all three numbers. They didn't yank my license but said any future violations could cost me my license. The incident was prior to ATF requiring importers to stamp and their name and add new serial numbers. Had I followed proper procedure I should have used the serial number on the invoice. The regs for multiple numbers were discussed at an ATF seminar. Can't recall why but I had to skip the meeting for some reason and ignorance is not an acceptable excuse.

ATF kept track of all my alleged violations. Nothing was in my folder about my cooperation of crawling out of bed about 3:AM on two occasions. Driving to my uniform business only to discover ATF was wrong. One incident they were a single digit off on a Taurus revolver. The second time after calling their New York office about 4:AM and telling them I never sold what they were tracing. "Oh I'm sorry we called the wrong dealer, thank you" followed by a click.
