More Dumb Questions

1. Im about to drill and tap this small ring 98 mauser Im working on. I have the sun optics jig and it seems to fit perfectly with the barrel still in the action. SO I am hoping to not remove the barrel from this one. How deep do I drill this thing?

2. Someone already added a remington style front sight. I want to add a 110 savage rear sight. It seems to fit the barrel contour perfectly where the original sight was. Can I drill the hole where the original was slightly deeper and larger to be tap it to hold the rear sight in place?

Thanks for the help. I seacrhed the archives and still couldn't quite get clarity on performing these tasks

I honestly don't know, I'm sure somebody will chime in here with the knowledge. Seems to me though because of the doubt. Can the sight base be altered to use the original screw? Can the rear sight be centered using a washer with a smaller screw or enlarging the hole in the sight to fit the original screw?

I seem to recall apx 10 or so years ago somebody posting about going to deep and unsuccessfully tried to plug it blowing it out first time he fired it.

Z1R you're needed here!!

Personally, I think that it is easier to pull the barrel than to drill and tap a blind hole. Especially with a small ring receiver, you don't have as much material to get a good thread to start with.

I agree with OD, pull the barrel. The kar98az is a thin walled receiver and you will want to drill & tap completely through so you'll have as much threads as possible.

EDIT: I guess I should have read the whole post! As I understand your question, you are adding a sight to the barrel. Don't go any deeper but you can open up the hole and tap it to a larger size.
