Extractor Collar

I need some advice on fitting an extractor collar on a 98 bolt. All the info i have says not to remove the collar unless you absolutely have to, but doesn't say anything else on the subject. I'm afraid that if I spread the collar wide enough to fit around the bolt I'll ruin it. Any Help would surely be appreciated.

Don't actually 'spread' it at all.

Think of it like a snap / C ring.

Hold the bolt in your 'dominant' hand and push off each

side with your thumbs allowing the collar to maintain spring

tension against the bolt the whole time.

It will likely deform slightly but, not as much as if you were to

spread it first.

It has been a while.

but as I recall when you are putting the extractor back on the bolt after you have put the collar back, You have to squeeze the side of the collar with a padded plairs to pinch the collar tight enough for the extractor to slide on.
