Milsurp Bob
Howdy all. So just wondering if anyone here has done or knows of anyone that has necked up an 8 x 57 to a 338? Seems like a neat cartridge and would be even neater in a nice sporterized GEW 98. And it seems to me that the question isn't why, but why not . gun nutty
I don't know that there would be a practical reason for a .338X57. Better bullet selection?
cold shot
I built a 8mm-308 once!! ..It was a waste of time..Shot great but it was just a can I do it gun..sold it..Built a 8mm-300win mag more than enuff gun for any USA animal...To your Q ? yes it can be done but better carts out there as wildcats...JMOO..Dave

Better bullet selection? 338x57 might be a good candidate for a rebore when trying to save a shot-out sporter barrel.
AzRednek
There was a common wildcat cartridge in the 50 and 60's nicknamed the "Poorman's Magnum". It was reverse of your idea. It was a 338 mag case necked down to 8MM. It was a way to magnumize a surplus rifle without a new barrel. Unlikely today one could find a gunsmith willing to ream the chamber because of the possible liability.
lemski4
I thought about kind of the same thing only in 358 cal, 35x57?
donmarkey
It's not a new idea. Here's a little info about it. http://www.chuckhawks.com/338_OConnor.htm Don
