  1. this is the near finished fit. the butt pad holds the leather down in the rear and the reat sling secures it from underneath so there is no sway or rattle. with a custom leather cheek weld pad i think i may succesfully have made a mass produced stock my own. add a matching tooled sling and i think it will be really nice. the one currently on the gun is just a prototype for a pattern and fit, the final will have perfect stiching and some tooling or possibly a brand. there are so many kinds of leather i would like to use for this. everything from deer or alligator belly to some of the insane dyed cammo saftey hides. i didnt know they had a use for the hides like that till i made this.
  2. Ok so I finally finished my stock. to me its beautiful. I also made a leather 4 shell buttstock holder to go with the leather cheek weld im making. I like it. it took me around half an hour to make and an afternoon in the sun to tighten around the stock glove tight. thats all for now.
  3. I got my barrel from e bay. have you educated yourself about the mausers yet? have you decided on caliber? besides having a gunsmith do it, you will need a reamer for the caliber of barrel to set headspace, a go/no go guage... dont just use a bullet, some cutting oil and possible a lathe to turn down the chamber end of the barrel in case of too much head space. google barrel reamer rental. also get a barrel vice they are worth the money or make one. dont use a pipe wrench you will regret it. there is no majic barrel that just goes on lol. this gets expensive quick, to make exactly what you want you may spend the cost of 2 used guns or more. im trying to be frugal with my build and i allready have around 700 in it, with another 500 to go on parts i still need to buy.
  4. Ha hahahahaha tupperware guns got me. I have a smith and wesson M&P9. I used to carry a glock .357 sig but the M&P has swooned me. It shoots imho as well as an H&K .40 I once shot and still hold as the pinacle of pistol comfort, accuracy and coolness. I love my old sandal wood grip'd Dan wesson .357 mag too. In a life or death situation the first clip from the M&P made me realise this is the gun i would grab. The high points are made from fisher price like plastic, but with a little love to the loading ramp and only shooting round nose fmj's they usually fire... Vs my taurus pt945 i can shoot for days, 17 rds per clip vs 8 rds per clip.... there isnt always just one or three guys, and to me its like beer, better to have left overs than needing to ride to the store just when shes getting hot. another thing if you reload the m&p just drops the spent shells at your feet vs flinging them for 2 to 5 yds so when your done you just reach down. just my opinion.
  5. I didnt know there was a place like this... I was just stumbling along looking for a butterknife bolt handle which everyone said was never gonna be found and bam. Yes i am hooked. Ive been collecting rifles and pistols in need of repair and fixing them since i got my first 410 breakopen from a flea market when i was 10. thanks to don i have a gorgeous handle on the way and i think im gonna make some friends here and share some stories, kick up my digital feet and stay awhile. My grandfather used to tell me, " you learn something new everyday, IF you listen". this is probably the most useful, and mature forum I have found to date. thanks
  6. So I have an old cut up remington 12-a. I have always had this affliction for collecting old bubbad guns and wanting to restore them to their former usefulness. The guy tried to turn it into some kind of pistol/pump sawed off contraption. he cut the barrel and feed tube, the inside loading tube is long lost. the stock and trigger guard have been cut off and it just leaves a button on the bottom and 2 little mounds where the trigger was. the reciever and firing pin and action are all in good working order, i shot it a few times before dismantling it. It appears to be really old, but i havent researched the numbers or anything. I really just need to borrow a scope mount jig and drill and tap for drilling my scope mounts. i dont want to spend 80 bucks to drill 3 or 4 holes, and i dont plan on mass producing sporterized mausers so ill probably only need it once. I would gladly trade the action, firing pin and trigger parts and hammer for use of this. Im keeping the reciever to practice graving. and may sell it once its graved. I would be happy to know some of these parts went to making a working gun instead of just laying around my ecetra pile..
  7. when i started it was so much info my head swam, it was sleepless nights and reading till headaches... now that i look back it was the most fun ive had sice i built my opel gt. there are worse fevers to be had lol thinking about it, the best i can hope for is that a hundred years from now someone may see what i have made and decide that it needs exactly nothing done to it.
  8. this. I reused the old brass one from the original. but if you dont have it brownells make some that can be filed to the right height and bedded in. I also plan on bedding the original but like the brass look and being able to bring things from its old life into the new one.
  9. Let me start by saying, I found the purists first and they did not like me or my new fangled ideas. I have had a horribly bubbad mauser for around 10 yrs. as most things do it began with a bet. me and a freind were watching the little girl that pretends to work on guns on American Guns. I had just finished restoring a 1934 singer 15-91 sewing machine and was admittedly bragging about my abilities to resurect various objects. When the challenge was struck. fix that mauser then bad***. Until this point I had only loved guns and restored old cars. I had no idea who P.O. Ackley was, or what hatchers noterbook was. I had never reloaded a bullet, or thought about hitting a target more than a couple hundred yards away. this bet let to a discovery, a richer history than i could find on tv unfolded for me like a mystery. the big game africa rifles and the 2600 fps rule for hunting big game, the 8-06 and loading tables and powder weights and covertions for powders that are considered too hot now. enough information to fill a room of pages. the barrel it had was only 14' long lol so i pulled it and wrestled with what to chamber my new project in. In the end i found a superb like unshot turk barrel for under 50 bucks. and i figured i can always change or go to 8-06 at a later date. so i got the barrel and took the lip off the reciever, then took a small amount from the bottom of the barrel so that both surfaces of the barrel seated firmly to the reciever. I wasnt part of a forum at the time so i didnt take pics, sorry. then i set the headspace with a rented reamer and go/ no go guage for standard 8mm. A boyds featherlite varminter stock in pepper laminate, a birchwood casey blue and stock kit and a whole lot of sanding followed. Its worth noting that i ordered a "turk mauser" barrel from e bay that actually turned out to be a vz-24 barrel, when i tried to return it the guy told me to take a refund and keep the barrel, so i sold it for 50 bucks on mauser Rx. this nearly covered the cost of the stock as i got it in unfinished condition. I also ordered a bold 2.5-4lb trigger. I have gotten as far as coating the stock, hating it and sanding it all back down and taking alot of the squareness out of it. im very happy now and the only pics i have currently dont show the change but i will post pics from the first coat anyways. I have decided to keep the lenght of the barrel and add a muzzel break to the end. I still need to steel bed the stock, have the bolt handle welded on, and drill and tap the scope mounts. I hand sanded the reciever smooth then reblued it. then test fired 2 wolf gold brand 198 gr. copper jacketed soft point bullets thru it. It was one of the greatest feeling of satisfaction i have ever felt to pull the bolt back and see a perfect shell with the case un streched or split and the primer still properly seated. well here are a few pics. i will post more soon.
  10. research said goldmine, lol it was awhile back but the said around 4k in good shape. mine isnt, and it doesnt matter its a sentimental thing. trading value doesnt mean alot to me either. my grandfather liked to make things. I have recently gotten into hammer and graver graving and have thought about cleaning up and expanding on the bird dog motifs and the spirals on the opening lever. ill post pics when i get a chance. It doesnt have to fire, and probably shouldnt unless i get a new barrel, but i think hed smile to see it in like new condition. I think its a 1914 model 15 i wanna say but im probably wrong. Im so caught up in doing a mauser sporter and restoring my grandfathers stevens favorite that was shot till it spit shells and wouldnt eject lol that all the part numbers and models hava almost combined. numrich has parts for it, the triggers are rusted solid nearly, with some hoppes i got some movement but there is alot wrong i can tell. Remember that value is also relative, one mans 300 bucks is another mans priceless relic, or a way to reach someone who isnt around any more.
  11. Being generally handy

  12. Im currently researching and getting ready to do the prep teardown on my grandfathers meriden 12guage double barrel shotgun. when he was 20 he found it discarded or lost in a ditch lol. his buddy, the sheriff at the time told him to keep it lol and gave him a 32 caliber pistol he had taken off a criminal as a carry peice. the gun didnt work and sat in my grandfathers gun cabinet all his life. now its in my gun cabinet and i would like to at least make it a nice wall hanger. the little bit of research ive done let to a healthy value for this gun too, which is something to consider when restoring a gun. so I know im new to this wonderland. this is a really cool forum by the way. does anyone have any advice? any suggestions? thanks in advance
