  1. I am very fond of Turkish firearms--latest is a Canick. Lots of gun for the $$, tho it is plastic framed
  2. Mr. Canoe--Welcome back! sounds like u have been busy---even if u lost the "bug" for restro/mods on your Mausers, u are still in the right church with your black rifles--just a different pew! I'll second yur "Merry Christmas" to all
  3. Gentlemen--Thank you for the responses, and accept my apology for this late reply! First, I should have mentioned that the rifle is a WWI German K98a--definitely a small ring receiver. I do not know if these have the small or large shank. From reading, I assume a regular large ring K98 bbl would fit, and was hoping the GEW88 bbl would as I have a nice one with no other use for it! Second, I failed to mention that I am extremley computer challenged, and have no idea how to post pics, nor do I own a digital camera. I realize this causes an extreme loss of interest for many readers (I also love to see pics)and do appreciate any help/advice given). The current bbl would have to be cut back below 16" to remove the rusted part. May have a flash hider welded on to make it legal if I decide to cut, but have a decent K98 (large ring) bbl I will probably use instead. My main quest is a military stock to make it look quasi-military, since it had been D&T and bolt altered. Seems there is no easy (read cheap) way to go--was hoping a Swede or M95 stock would work. Guess I'll relegate it to the "too hard" area of the safe! As it was a gift, won't sell it/part it out-- Wishing us all a belated Happy New Year-- Polock
  4. A friend gave me a small ring Mauser 98 that some one did a terrible job of sporterizing. Bore has severe rust for the last 6-8 inches, and the steps have been removed (looks like it was done with a file). Rifle is in a LR 98 Mauser sporter stock, bolt altered and rcvr D&T. I am thinking about making it a military looking pseudo "snipper" rifle--don't want to replicate any type rifle, just want to play with a scoped rifle with a military look, so would appreciate some advice: What military stock will fit this action? For reasons of economy, don't want a new stock or to buy an original. Will a GEW88 barrel fit this action? I have a bbld rcvr (Centerfire Arms) with a decent bore. Other than this, is there another option besides Swede 6.5 bbls? Appreciate any help from knowledgable members with this potential project--
  5. I like the classic lines--bolt handle looks "just right"--Now for a G&H side mount with a new Leupold manu. Alaskan--best of old & new.
  6. I've used Alumahyde II on a Indian 2A and a spare bbl I had sitting around. Quite satisfied with results; did not sandblast, quick rub down with 80 grit. Used matt black & grey parkerizing. The parker was a very light grey--when I use it again I'll get a can of the dark grey. Make sure to degrease well, and use very light coats--wait a min or 2 before adding additional coats. Probably most important, it takes this stuff a long time to completely dry! I tried to re-assemble my rifle in about a week, and got some "wrinkles" when I fitted some of the parts. Next time I'll wait a month before reassembly.
  7. has not set their status

  8. Sounds good--I'll take your advice---appreciate the help--
  9. thank you for the speedy reply--I believe we have a feed store or two in the area, so I'll look. Assuming I find some, how do you apply?? Brush it on like shellac or rub it in like BLO? Any need to thin with MS, etc??
  10. I have one of the Finn M39 rifles that IO put russian PSOP scopes on and sold a few years ago. The stock has no finish at all (looks new). I would like to put an original type finish on the wood. Where do I find pine tar, and how do I apply it?? Thanks in advance for any info you all may be able to provide-- Polock
  11. Thany you for sharing this info--some new stuff here that I definitely will try--
  12. Looks like a "B" sporter, or a very nice guild gun. What really impressed me is the work you did on the rear sight. Beautiful!! Great job on the shortening--it really looks cool. Most would have given in to the easy way: sweat on a Williams or other aft mkt sight. Wish I could do such nice work-- Did you also re-do the front sight?? Would like to see a pic. Bet it really sets of the rifle-- Again, congrats on a beautiful job-- Polock
