bja105
Who uses this kit? http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/Pro...ail.aspx?p=5473 What additional tooling do I need? My machinist buddy will help me with this. I have a few 1903's, a few 98 Mausers, and a 96 Swede to do. http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/Pro...%20SAFETY%20KIT Any tips? z1r
the Wisner kit is the one to use. I use the chapman fixture. Don Markey will likely answer, he has done many of these and also done a write up or two here I believe.
donmarkey
They list the addtional tooling needed in the info for the jig. Other than that you need to shim the bolt suppied with the jig to use Jim's wings. The jig is set up for chapman wings. The chapman's are a little cheaper but more work to install. The also aren't serrated or handened, but that allows you to finish it the way you like. I prefer the PME (wisner) wing unless I want the checker the edge of the lever. -Don
ken98k
I've only done 1 of the Chapman safeties but have installed several of the Wisners. The Wiseners are definately easier and IMHO a better safety. Kenny
bja105
I have been all over the description, but I still don't see any mill tooling specified. What am I missing?
donmarkey
1/8" x 3" slitting saw arbor for saw 7/32" x 1" keyway cutter #31 drill #29 drill or #21 for PME wings and to make drill guide Lathe to make a spring offset drill guide (not required but alot easier) 6-48 tap couple stones for a dremel to radius the pivot point of the shroud I'm sure I'm missing something Don
ken98k
Lathe to make a spring offset drill guide (not required but alot easier) Don A piece of 3/8 drill rod to make the plug. I've never heard of the offset guide before, is that one of your improvements? Kenny
donmarkey
no it's one of glen chapman's. It's a guide to drill the spring detent hole in the upper half of the old safety hole. Don
bja105
Thanks guys. I'm sure some of that will make more sense when I have the tool and directions in my hands. Is there anything special about using it on a 1903 Springfield?
donmarkey
Yes the cuts are different and you need to make a new hold down bolt the one with the jig won't work. You also need to solder in a filler and modify the bolt lock plunger and modify the striker assembly. Don
