I'm thinking of building a 416 taylor with a 300WinMag case. What do y'all think . I think it would be perfect for BIG bears!

With the base of the 416 bullet taking-up so much volume inside the case, and the 300 Win Mag having a shorter neck, I don't see where you'll get much added powder capacity over the "standard" Taylor round. I'd just go with the Taylor.

Your powder capacity will be limited by the overall length of the magazine for both cartridges, no? The 300 Win base case might be be longer, but you will still be limited to the overall length of the Mauser magazine; conversely, you can always seat the bullets out further in the Taylor.

Actually, a longer neck on the Taylor really helps a lot with feeding. A buddy had Tom Burgess make him one and Tom demonstrated how a longer neck kept the bullet pointed where it needed to be for 100% reliablility. In a bear gun reliability is far more important than 50 fps.

Sounds like a great project.

Z1r, thanks for the insite. I think I'll use the 300win mag cases But, I'll use a 416 Taylor dies to reshape them. I don't have any 338mag cases but I do have 350 300win mag cases. I think they would work just fine.

If you are forming them it matters not which case you use. ECEPT, you'd better be prepared to use an intermediate sizer. Expanding from .308 to .416 MAY cause some split necks.

I thought you meant creating a 416 using the 300 winnie's short neck. Best bras sto use is virgin 458 but 338 is cheaper and more abundant. If you can get 300 winnie cheap enough then some case loss can be tolerated.

keep us posted.

I knew of a guy that was closing up shop and I got 1000 round for 100 bucks I gave 200 to my brother in law , 300 for my 300winmag 150 for the 8mm/300 and 350 for the 416mag. Brass is no problem

strait shooter:

I think I mis-understood what you were asking for. My apologies.

My searches on the 416 Taylor showed using 458 Win cases to form the Taylor case. 300 Wim Mag brass would be a good solution, if cheap and plentiful.

I'd be very interested in seeing a Mauser built on this. I think Remington did shooters a dis-service by not legitimizing the Taylor case; they should have released the Taylor round in lieu of the .416 Rem Mag case.

I think the .416 Rem makes more sense for Remington since their action will easily fit the round. If they'd been using the Zastava actions instead the outcome might have been different.

what I was planning on doing was to use a tapered expander ball from a 35 whelen. I'd put the pintle and expander into the 416 taylor full sizer die first, the switch to the 416 pintle w/ expander . then trim back to 2.500 for the 416 taylor size cases. How does this sound? I was looking up load lata. The 416 taylor with a 300 grain bullet has 3100 foot pounds of energy at 250 yds when leaving the barrel at 2650 fps. Now that would definately sink a large bears boat!

Dumb question, as I've never tried this... Why not remove the decapping assembly from the re-sizing die, run the case in to form a headspace shoulder, and fill with a charge of Bullseye or W231 (No bullet)? 20 grains of W231 would be dandy. Top off the charge with cream-of-wheat and a paraffin plug, keep the cases upright and head to the range. You can trim the cases to length after fireforming.

Or maybe the .35 caliber expander would be easier. Heh. Reloading is so much fun...
