I can see the end of my first sporter in sight now,,, sorta.

My question is,,,, how to remove the rear sight and base to which it is mounted. Clearly the sight is held on with a pin,,, but is the base soldered to the barrel?? If so, then I should simply heat and remove I guess. What will this leave me,,,,, a nasty spot of solder left on the barrel?? What is the process of removing residual solder.

This is a critical decision for me. I originally planned a iron sighted gun (peep sight). If I leave the base on, I can later install a scout mount. If I take it off,,, I ruin an already nice blue job.

Thoughts????

Heat just enough to to melt the solder while tapping the sight towards the muzzle. Then wipe off excess solder with and rag or gloved hand.

Next take some 220 grit sand paper and remove the residual solder with a shoe shine motion. You will of course have to touch up the blueing in this area or reblue the entire barrel.
