  1. This month in Rifle Magizine there was an article about the 375 Ruger. It looks like the two firms of Hornady and Ruger have finally presented the information to the public as to the specs on the round and testing by gunwriters and others has begun on the rifle. Looks like it is going to get the same job done the 375 H&H round has done for almost 100 years. I am guessing the trend of trying to get a shorter action to do the same thing a long action has done will continue till the manufactures figure out a new way to sell rifles. I have a cousin that is a doctor and has picked up the hunting bug.. Last year for a joke my step-dad and myself tryed to presude him that it was almost impossible to kill the average size deer with anything less than a 375 RUM. LOL He almost bought into it. I can imagine my cousin taking his 375 into the hardwoods and blowing deer apart, and nearly knocking himself out of the tree stand in the process. Eventually he settled for a 25 wssm. Which is a far cry from a 375 but it was fun to try and sway his purchase. Plus I always wanted to feel the kick of the 375 RUM for myself. MS8mm
  2. You could make yourself a 8mm RUM (325 RUM). That cartridge would be a thumper. Not sure of the possible capacity but it would be over 100 grains from what I remember about the 30 Rum. Of course in my way of thinking I have no use for such a cartridge. I hunt mostly whitetails and pigs. Nothing is ever over 300 yards away, and I have eight diferent cartridges in my safe now that can handle that plus just about everything up to moose. 30/06, 8mm mauser, 6.5x55 sweed, 7.62x54r russian, 7mm mauser, 308 winnie, 243 winnie all of which are suitable for what I hunt. There are a few cartridges I would like to get a hold of to try out and I can see the appeal of rechambering a old mauser to a round that will out proform the orginal. I have hunted and shoot many magnums, but the appeal of them using up all my powder to do the same thing a standard round will do with less is not so appealing .. So I sold my one and only magnum I ever owned. I guess I am just to fruggle. I can not condone anyone from having a magnum but they have never appealed to me for what I intend to shoot. I can see where rechambering an old mauser to 8x63 Sweed, like on the gentlemans web site, would be adventurous if I were in Sweeden and had access to hundreds of rounds of surplus ammo and no rifle to shoot it in might cause me to get creative like he did. I was thinking if I could not get my mauser to behave and shoot like I wanted I could rechamber it to 8mm/06 and keep the same barrel. For now though with it shooting 1 in. groups at 100 with the 185's I am in no hurry for this. One magnum that stirs my interest would be the .308 Norma. possibly even one in .358 Norma would be fun to play with. most likly though I will never get one just because I can't justify the expense and don't have the need.
  3. I have heard of a scope mount that can be used with a blind person holding the gun and a person seated right behind him or her and can actually see through the scope. Using a extended eye relief scope it is possible. Have the scope positioned off to the side and have a person with full sight guiding them. I have often thought about what I would do if I lost my eyesight or the ability to function in a way that would allow me to hunt with out the aid of another. I think it would be wonderful to help out with a person who had a disability do some of these things. One of the elders of my hunting club lost his sight in his 30's do to an accident. He has not fired a gun in maybe 20 years. This year he won a rem 870 shotgun in a raffle. His wife entered him in the raffle buying him one ticket and herself four. We got quite a chuckle out of the fact that a blind man won a gun.. We asked him if he wanted to shot the gun, he said sure. So we got a few shells and got him in the back yard and helped him load the gun, and aimed him up in a tree. He enjoyed it and we all had a fun time. The way it is going it is hard to find a reason just because a person has a disability they are not allowed to participate in any outdoor activity, blind of not. If someone is willing to help a person who is blind safely aim and handle the firearm. I see no reason why it would not be something that could bring a bit of joy to a person who's life is already bad enough because they have lost there sight. I, like many know certain outdoor activities would not work, but for others anyone we can bring into this sport would help. Blind people vote to, and the more support we have the longer we will all enjoy the rights to bare arms and hunt. MS8mm
  4. I am with the OldFart on this one.. Depending on the powder I am using the charges I am getting will very from +- .2 gr. The larger the powder the less accurate it becomes. Powders like varget, the alliant powders the short cuts from imr and hogden, as well as all the ball powders can be thrown with very small differences in charge wieghts. Working with RL 22 just yesterday, I think I threw three in a row that needed only one stick of powder from the trickler to be dead on the mark on the scale. Of course the chances of that are possible but I don't think people put as much time into the Lee measure to really get the thing to work. I also have alot of Lee items besides the measure. I like there dies(rgb dies best buy on the market), presses and I have a primer as well. The only thing I do not like is the scale, That is one piece I wish Lee would have thought about a little more before putting in his kit. I think it can do the job, I just don't like it . I have a 505 from rcbs and rcbs case prep tools but I found a kit on ebay that was a steal so got them instead of lee. MY 2 cents. MS8mm
  5. I have had luck with my sweed finally. I have tryed a few bullets and a bunch of powders and finally found a load that shoots about an inch. Using hornady 140 grain interlocks and 48 grains of RL 22 I hit the inch mark with my old m38 sweed. Shot a few groups with this combination and all were just a bit over a inch. I am really happy. Everyone wants cloverleaf groups I just want to keeps them all inside one of those little orange 1.5 in. target stickers, and with the sweed I have found a load that can do it. MS8mm
  6. Was wondering, I have heard alot about changing the firing pin spring in all types of rifles from factory to the mil-sups. I was wondering how much improvment can be expected from a change from the original spring to a newer after-market one. Also how does this improve accuracy? Is it a more consistant tension on the bolt and pin? Is is a more consistant hit on the primer? Was thinking about changing my sporterized 8mm and my Savage 30/06 firing pin springs. Is this worth the money? MS8mm
  7. Today about twenty powders exist in the range suitable for the 8mm mauser. imr 4064, reloader 15, vv 150 vv140, H bl-c(2), vv135, ramshot hunter, ramshot tac, h 414, win 748, imr 3031, 4350's4350 is the slowest I would go for the 8mm mauser. There is just not enough room for anything slower. Some times a gun just doesn't like a bullet. But with the choice in compenents these days there is something that can make it shoot decently in your rifle. MS8mm
  8. We have way more deer than hunters and I am in a very good state for deer hunting. We can take 6 a year. 3 bucks and 3 does. I waited till college to get into hunting and regret that I did not take up the sport before that time. It was not until my mother meet her current husband that my family really got into deer hunting. I hunted ducks for a few years before that, but when I killed my first deer I knew where I wanted to spend my time. I still enjoy duck hunting, but will not drop deer hunting so I can afford to go. This year is the hardest I have hunted, I have been in the stand more and put more effort in to the preseason work than any year before. It is paying off now. What is funny my step-father who has been hunting deer for maybe 30 some years has gone deerless so far, and it is bugging the crap out of him. He keeps saying he is going to quit. I told him he just needs a new rifle. He is still using his one and only deer rifle. A Remington 742 in 30/06, I think he bought it in 1976. The thing has killed more deer than I have ever seen. He is on the verge of putting it in the closet and getting a new one.
  9. I got my second deer of the year on sat. Got to the stand just before daylight that morning. I spent the dark time getting settled and ready. It being full moon this weekend and cold I had a good feeling when I left that morning. My mother was sitting in the stand about 300 yards away on another hill. Day broke on a beautiful morning. Frost made the trees look white in the dawn light and the birds seem to be having a hard time finding a reason to get out of the nest because it was very quiet. At 6:49 a deer came out at the end of one of my lanes. I had plenty of light and knew from it size at about 100 yards that it was a shooter. Although I could not tell it was a buck or a doe there was not enough light to see antlers. I had a feeling it was a buck because of the way it had its nose on the ground and seemed to be on the trail of something. I slowly got my gun into postion got the cross hairs in place and pulled the trigger. the bullet struck about an inch and a half above where I was aiming, which was at the heart. With the drop in elevation the bullet hits high. That really didn't matter because he hit the dirt when the bullet hit him. I cycled the bolt and put the crosshairs back on the deer. It didn't wiggle again. I sat there for a min or two catching my breath and pumping my fist. It has been two years without me getting a deer. This year so far has been a good time. I got down out of the stand and called my mother on the phone and told her, I had one down and to come on over. It took her a few mins to get there. When she got there we walked down the hill and the closer I got the more I started to doubt myself that I had shot a shooter deer. When I got to the deer I saw the antlers, little thought they were they were antlers, and I was glad I hadn't killed a baby. My mom killed A spike with a kicker last night at 5:10. It was a two year old deer. The spikes were working on 10 in. long. The cold spell that entered this last week has finally moved the deer out of the thickets and seems to have gotten the rut started. Hoping to get another few this weekend. I am hoping it will be the big one in my area I have been hunting. There is a nice buck running around in my area I have been after for two years. I will try to post picture of mine and my mothers deer. As always good hunting and have fun. MS8mm
  10. We better get out and buy up as many guns as we can before we lose power all together. If a democrat gets in the White House I bet the first thing he trys to go after is gun control. We better unite together and elect someone that will at least balance out the two houses. but For the life of me I can't think of anyone running that I would want in office. If we don't watch it is going to be a woman as well. Would be a lot of change then for sure.
  11. I don't form 35 whelen brass, but I do make 9.3x57 brass from 8mm. Which is about the same amount of increase from .308 to .358- .323 to.366. I bought the Hornady coustom dies in the caliber and was worried about this when I started making cases. I was told that it was not needed to make the cases but I feel that is could be useful in releaving some of the stress the brass goes through when making the conversion. I have done about 50 cases to 9.3 and have not lost a one in forning it to 9.3x57. I have lost more cases in resizing after being fired in the gun. This was due to lube that was gathering in the die and would on occasion dent in the shoulder area when it was passed through. Cleaning of the die and the proper amount of lube keeps this from happing.
  12. Thanks Rev for what you have done for our country. Head up to Shreveport. We can go bang a few rounds out at the range and then I can take you to have that beer. MS8mm

    8mm-06?

Like z1r says depends on what you think is practical. Is handloading practical for you? For me it is fine I have all most all of the components required to make 8mm06 ammo. All but the dies. Making it a ackley would mean taking the barrel to a smith and leting him ream the chamber with a reamer of ackley demensions. If you decide the 8mm06 is not for you I would consider taking it off your hands :). I have been thinking of doing the 8mm06 ackley for sometime now and it would be the first step in the project. How is the condition of the barrel? I would call the proformance of the two identical. There is no real diference between the 30/06 and the 8mm 06. The ackley can improve the ballistics on average some where near 100 fps. Which is about what ackleying any cartridge will do except for the 35 whelen which usally will get only around 50fps more velocity. The ackley on the whelen does not improve powder capacity much but does improve what some would think as a small shoulder. but chambered correctly the regular whelen will not have a problem with headspace. Here is my email if you want to get rid of the barrel C_Sanso@yahoo.com . It would make a dandy rifle for all North American game if you decide to go with it just no factory ammo avaliable. MS8mm
