karlunity
Read the history of reconstruction written before the 1960'sThe view is not quite so PC.There was great hate on both sides by 65. 600000 kia out of pop of 20.000.000 and perhap a million wia.The South was in ruins and many in the North and West lost family. The idea that the South was to send the sons of the men conquered to "freedman" yankee schools ...why not send the sons of the IRA to Eton???? The freed slaves were seen as supporters of the yankee and Southern whites had their political rights removed and the land occupied which was NOT the deal that they were promised as a condition of surrender. The state governments of the South under reconstruction ran like Detroit is run. Now, you lose a war, you take what you get. ButThe idea that Reconstruction was a rainbow new deal for all is PC revision.
