  1. He was offering Enfield parts that interested me Ejectors, bolts etc.
  2. Does anyone know about this guy? I'm frustrated with him, he has had several Enfield parts that I tried to bid on but I get the message that he won't accept bids from me and I don't know why. When I try to ask a question, I get the message that he can't answer questions. I've dealt with him in the past successfully. I wen't back through my history and I left him positive feedback so I can't figure out why he has blocked me. Anyone have a clue what is going on there? He must have blocked several people since I see no bids up until the last moment.
  3. I was informed by my hunting buddy the other day that the gentleman at Economy Gunsmithing is wishing to retire and might I be interested in taking over the business. My answer was 'no way'. Firstly my 40 hours a week "work" work-load is so heavy that they are constantly asking that we take over-time. Then plus things at home have gotten even busier. The end result being that I already have years worth of my own gunsmith projects without taking on others. Then it occurred to me that several of my MFRC buddies are in other situations where they may have the time to get involved in such a venture. Maybe if one were to get the appropriate license and head up the venture he could sub out tasks as appropriate to others talents. I'm referring to Economy Gunsmithing not as in 'cheap' gunsmithing but as in near Economy Pa. I know that for several of my MFRC buddies that would be approximately an hour or less of a drive and maybe if they figured out how to split things up such that they didn't have to go in every day, that wouldn't be too bad of a deal. You guys know who you are, talk amongst yourselves. I'd just be interested to know if you what 'yuns' guys think about the idea.
  4. I know you haven't heard from me for a while, too much else going on now to do much gun work but keeping my eye out and stocking up for retirement. To that end I'm seeing a 270 Winchester Enfield barrel up for sale on Ebay. It is in the standard profile. 270 Winchester is a waste of an Enfield action in my opinion but if I could ream it out to 270 Weatherby the barrel might be worth considering. I recall of prior discussions about 30.06 to 300 Weatherby it was said that due to the outer taper of the barrel that the neck / shoulder area would get dangerously thin. I understand that from the rimless '06' case to the belted magnum case it is the same thing. The question is does .277 Vs .308 make a difference?
  5. Well thank you all for your input. I guess that at the moment I'm thinking 357 Magnum. I popped 3 in my 7.62 X 39 rig (03 Turk) with a short follower just to see and It looks problematic. I've got a Mosin Naget that I wouldn't mind using. It would seem that the single stack would be more straight forward but I wonder about the bolt face being so much larger. Tinker
  6. I was recently chastised by an un-named fellow member for not having been on the board for a while so here I am. My brother is an Ohio resident and tells me that they made a new regulation now allowing the use of a rifle with 'straight wall cartridge' ( no bottle necks ) for deer hunting. So I was wondering If I might put together something for him either out of mostly parts that I have on hand or might be obtained without a huge investment. My first thought was to find the most powerful 32 cal cartridge that might allow me to use an 8MM barrel and Mauser action that I have on hand. So are there any Ohio residents that have contemplated the same thing or guys that have done a similar conversion? The only one that I know of off hand is the 45ACP conversion. Anyone have any Ideas, thoughts, suggestions? Tinker
  7. I have several / many used barrels and have noticed a tendency to find minor pits that appear almost as if a bullet or other object had been sitting in the bore long enough that at the edge of the object corrosion had started. Ahead of or behind the barrel looks perfect. Of course I see more near the breach than near the muzzle but, very often the pitting is concentrated to a very short length of the barrel. I wonder if how a barrel is made from molten steel lays down a pattern for the ring tendency. Is it an extrusion process for many makers or, what is the primary process? I don't really know. Anyone able to say in 1000 words or less the usual process or have any U-tube links? I'm curious. Tinker
  8. Could someone with a receiver tool take the saddle ( "J" shape of the opening part ) and trace it on a piece of paper and mail it to me? I want to fab a saddle to fit my wrench Thanks! Tinker
  9. I've been watching a show called "Wild West Alaska" It's about Wild West guns in Anchorage. Jim West is the owner and he is building his own lever gun, and they do a lot of custom work. I'd think that they would likely have one.
  10. Hey guys, the son of a friend (20 something) is a graphic artist with a laser etching machine. He is interested in etching stocks for fun and profit. He has asked me for some ideas and if I'm willing to provide any stocks for free etching practice. I have some take off stocks for the practice. My first thought was if checkering could be successfully be done with laser etching. For all I know checking may be a whole different animal from etching a scene on the butt-stock. I'm looking to you guys for Ideas, patterns, links to whatever concerning laser etching. Thanks! Looking forward to what you guys come up with. Tinker

  12. Well as someone who bought a small pile of receivers, it's nice to go to a gun show and find something that had been badly buba-ed and talk the seller down and walk out with it for a song knowing that you have a pristine receiver at home. Also if you buy something from an on line auction and you find that it has lug set-back or something, having a stash of good receivers turns that situation from &(&(&)&%%)_$#@!#$ *)&()%&$%*)) &&^%))($#()!!! to oh well no big deal. Just my $.02 Tinker
  13. Hi Jason, good to hear from you. I just seem so busy otherwise that I'm doing more stock-piling of parts than building anymore. I'm assuming that when I reach retirement in a few year that I'll find the 'round-toits' under the gun parts on my workbench. I just hope that by then I'll still be able to haul my new build out to the woods and bring home the meat. Craig
