  1. Since this forum was a big help, I thought I would share my first two Mauser projects. Here is my 24/47 Scout: Here's how I did it: 1) Cut down military stock, hollowed out buttstock to save weight, added recoil pad, added sling swivel studs and bed action and first 5 inches of barrel channel. 2) Drilled hidden holes in magazine box to lighten this assembly. 3) Sent bolt out to have new turned handle mounted 4) Cut and crowned barrel with common tools using directions off the net 5) Mounted 2x BSA handgun scope using B-Square mount 6) Added Bold Trigger with safety 7) Applied a camo paint job Result: 7lb rifle that shots 1.5moa with my tailored handloads. My second effort was purchased as a barreled action off of Gunbroker.com. It's a Colombian 98 action and came with a brand new 30-06 barrel. It also had a turned down bolt handle and was drilled and tapped for scope mounts which were included. The price was very good....... When it arrived I decided that it might be a good idea to check the headspace. It easily closed on a no-go. I think whoever installed the barrel simply screwed it on! So it went off to Mike McCabe to be properly headspaced. He turned it around very quickly. When I got around to working on it, I did the following: 1) Sanded, polished and reblued the receiver and bolt 2) Installed a Bold trigger with safety 3) Fitted an inexpensive synthetic stock, bedded front ring and entire barrel channel using epoxy putty and 5 minute epoxy. (The rest of the stock fit great without modification.) 4) Applied a camo paint job 5) Mounted scope I haven't shot this one yet - but I am looking forward to seeing how well it shoots! Thanks to all of you who post info and share your knowledge here!
  2. Besides, I have another 30-06, and if it shoots well in this Mauser, I would like to use the same reloads I use in my H&R single shot (They are well below maximum). It therefore makes sense to resize the case, not just the neck. z1r - I'll shoot you an email about getting this fixed. Thanks again everyone!
  3. THANK YOU everyone for your answers. Here's some more info - if anyone knows someone reliable who could do the work at a reasonable price, please let me know! The only local guy I could find hasn't returned my email. 1) There are no sights, so that is no problem. 2) I live in the Sierra foothills east of Sacramento. Thanks again everyone!
  4. I recently picked up a Columbian 98 that had been rebarreled to 30-06 using a replacement stepped military barrel. Since I had no idea who did the rebarrel, I picked up a no-go gauge and sure enough, it closes easily on it. I know that I could check it with a field gauge - but I reload and a chamber that loose would have to be really hard on brass....... So, a couple of questions....... 1) How in the world do it fix this? 2) Is it worth trying to salvage this barrel, or should I just write it off and by another? Thanks!
