Karl,
I've been there a couple of times. The place is always packed. The prices are reasonable. It about an hours drive for me or I would go more often. They have a large selection of used guns. Cool place.

Sounds like a good project to me. The origional barrel did have steps. They were probably removed. If the barrel cleans up good it should make a good hunting rifle. I would clean the barrel and shoot it to see if it is good. Aftermarket stocks are avaible for the Swedish Mauser. Pics as you progress please?

My limited experience with non-lead pellets is this. The non-lead pellets are so much lighter, that they fly at a greater velocity, making them unstable. I tried some of the Crossman non-lead pellets.
Try a heaver pellet.
