Threading A Barrel

Recommended Posts

I have a previously sporterized M94 carbine and I plan on threading the barrel for a flash hider. The barrel diameter is 19/32. Is this enough to thread for a 5/8-24 birdcage or is there not enough"meat" for the 5/8 threads? I also have a hk94 flash hider that I believe is 15mm but I would have to cut the back off of it and I prefer the birdcage.

Oh, a 7.62 flash hider. OK, I see that now. When you said birdcage, I thought standard AR15 birdcage and 5/8-24 is pretty oddball. Anyway, according to

5/8-24 minor diameter (the cut part, or minimum diameter part of the bolt/barrel in this case, or the inside diameter of the nut) is 0.580". Your barrel is 0.594". That's not going to thread 5/8-24 with any kind of useable thread.

M15 might work, if you can get the die started on the end. M15 has a minor diameter of 0.551". The major diameter is 15mm, or 0.590", so that part is pretty close to your 0.594. The die should cut that last 2 thousandths radius off.
