Recommended Posts

Hi,

I got this is trade.

It is a late 40's Husqvarna 30-06. Mauser 98 action.

Looks like the previous owner was fond of oil. Great for the metal but not the wood.

Only thing missing is the graduated ramp that should be under the rear sight.

Anyone have any experience or comments on these?

I think the stock is artic birch

Very nice rifle, if the bore is good and the scope still holds, I would say you did well.

As to oil in the stock, if there is too much, remove the stock and go over it with a heat gun,

You want to take your time but in a hour or two the oil should be gone.

Purple clearer will help, but you may have to refinish.

Congrats on the nice set-up you got!! I'm with Karl on the stock. The stain job although it might just be the picture looks very amateurish. Appears to have half-assed the steel wool after staining. The checkering looks excellent. You might consider taking it down to bare wood and starting over. You might be surprised and find it is Walnut.

The sight ladders can often be found at gun shows if you have the patience to go through junk boxes. I priced out a cheapie through Numrich. It would have cost me about $12. Being the cheapskate I am I found one at a gun show for a buck. Vendor had no idea what it came off but it worked fine on my old Winchester 22 Boy's Rifle.

She shoots straight. Other than putting a new weaver on her Ive done nothing but shoot it. Very consistent no matter what heat or what I feed her. I think ive found my forever rifle. I did find a sight ladder for backup irons and sighted that in for close range.
