z1r
Here's a little 1910 Mexican action that I got a while back. The action had already been drilled & tapped for a one piece base. It came with a .25 Caliber barrel. Inspried by Clemson's recent post, I decided I needed a little .257 Roberts. Since I am sending out the '36 Mexican for heat treating I decided to send mine to so I hurried up and surface ground the rear bridge, drilled & tapped a second hole on the rear bridge, and welded on a bolt handle. The rear bridge had one hole (the rear one) when I got it but that hole is too far forward to allow a conventional .500" spacing scope base to be mounted. Normally I'd weld up both holes and then drill new hole. Seeing as I was in a time crunch I decided instead to take the rear base off a Model 70 in .375 H&H that I just repaired and recut the base to fit the Mauser Bridge. The base was cut at an angle by the factory so it would not fit the Model 70 properly but the spacing would be perfect my hurry up project. The old H&H length Model 70's had .330" rear hole spacing so would be perfect once a new radius was cut on the bottom. Normally I remove the crest but this particular action had a nice one and grinding the front ring would have taken more time so I left it. I moved about three tons of dirt this weekend and 1700 lbs of landscaping rock. Didn't leave much time to work on the receiver. Not was nice as wfpack14's but hey, it'll do. Clemson
Oh, man...........!!! That will make up into a Good-un. Wish I had a couple of Mexican actions in the safe Keep the pics coming on this project. Do you have a stock yet? Clemson
z1r
No, I don't have the stock yet. But, most likely it will be the same as what I use on wfpack14's. I debated long and hard between amking it a 6.5x55 or a .257. In the end I settled on the .257 Because my oldest son will soon be big enough to shoot a centerfire and the Bob should build up lighter and kick less than even the swede. tinkerfive
What purpose does the knob extension on the cocking piece serve? I picked up a sported Mauser with one and am wondering why it is there. Always learning something Tinker
z1r
Tinker, like the Swede mauser, they were there for manually cocking the action. If you don't like yours, please sell it to me. I'll even supply you with another cocking piece.
z1r
Well, While waiting for the receiver(s) to come back from the heat treater I contoured this barrel. Recontoured would be more appropriate. The other was too bulky especially near the chamber. I wanted to improve ballance and lighten the barrel but at the same time retain enough meat so that it wouldn't heat up too fast. I recontoured the issue triggerguard. The receiver and bolt are fresh out of heat treating hence the odd color. The metal work needs a final polish and then bluing. I am awaiting the pattern stock. I have a very petite stock on the way. Now back to the customer's guns.
Clemson
I LIKE it! You may find yourself addicted to the .257 Roberts. Less recoil than a .243 and a better killer to boot. Clemson
wfpack14
Looks good Mike, I really like the contour of that barrel on that action.
