I'm thinking of getting my 14 year old son a project gun. I am trying to teach him to do things for himself. Carpentry, welding, auto repair and such. Anyway, this would be right up his alley. He was born on July 8, 1993. (07/08/93) So that got me to thinking,,,,,,,,( :o dangerous I know) could a Spanish M93 handle the 7-08 cartridge? If so, we could build a "7-08-93" to commemorate his birthday.

I gotta dig around and find some pressure values for comparison, but thought I'd start by posting here. Any opinions??

I would not recommend it. The max pressure of the original 7mm mauser is listed as 51,000 psi and the 7-08 is listed as 61,000 psi. The older mauser 93's thru 96's were not made for those higher pressures and you would be taking chances in stressing them, especially if you used factory loads. A 7-08-98 would be much safer.

My reference shows 7-08 max avg. PSI @ 57.5K. The Spanish '93 was, as you know, was originally built for the 7mm Mauser @ 51K avg. PSI. And later, those crazy Spaniards rechambered their 1916 (shortened '93) for 7.62 NATO with it's max PSI @~ 48-49K PSI.

Now we get into the "can of worms" over 308 vs 7.62, but you've probably seen some claim the Spanish Guardia Civil (7.62 converted Spanish 1916) can take 308Win pressures at around 60k avg. PSI. I don't subscribe to this. I base this strictly off my reading/talking experiences on the subject. I wouldn't run anything over that original 51K PSI limit in a '93 action. Just my dos pesos....

Oh, if you're looking for numbers correlation....don't forget the 9.3 Mausers (either x57 or x62, your pick). Your son would learn an important "recoil lesson" then... ;)

GA, hang the 93 on the wall and get a 98 and call it "Bill". You can't imagine what you'd do to a 93 to make it half decent and then it would still be just half decent and won't handle that ctg.

Yes Indeed.. that 93 will "blow up in yer face" Heck ya have proof all around you... or at least on the "web"

better to send that extremely dangerous "small ring" to me!!! I will give it a great home. But. I will Not hang it on the Wall!!! It will get treated like the rest of 'em... Loaded w/ respect... shot for effect!!! MV

All that aside... The 7X 57 is the best choice... cause it feeds like it is supposed to!!! And.. The 7X57 Can outperform Anything in its Pressure class.... cause it has more case capacity!!!! But... YMMV.... MV

It is my understanding the Spanish 7.62 was loaded to produce lower pressure than the standard 7.62 NATO. I have shot the Spanish 7.62 in a M1-A. It definitely had less felt recoil than the US GI ammo we also shot on the same outing. It could have been attributed to a lighter weight bullet.

10-4 Guys!!

I dug around some more last night looking for pressure values. Your numbers are actually higher than I found.

7X57 = SAAMI average was 46,000

While this would be an EASY number to stay under if reloading the 7-08, factory loads would for sure screw the pooch. And I cannot guareentee that my boy would ONLY shoot reloads throughout his life. And what if he gave it to his child one day,,,,,,,,,, and the grandkid loaded some factory stuff in it?????

Nope, I can't risk all that. Was a nice thought though. Would have had some meaning to it.

And just what pressures are the 7.62x39 loaded to? You'd be surprised.

Best bet if you must use the action is to stick with one of three cartridges; the 6.5x55, 7x57, or 8x57 and use US factory loadings. While not nearly as flashy as contemporary cartridges which light up all the lights on the chronographs, they will all kill deer sized animals with ease.

Heck.. I was Surprised what the pressure of a 300 Savage is!! I think my "new" 93 might just be an 8X57!! MV

I have a couple of Husky M46's in 8x57 and while I'm sure they are capable of handling more pressure I just use Factory rem loads, it keeps things simple. They are all VERY accurate and a 170 grain bullet at 2400 is plenty. Heck, my .30-30 never launched a 150 near that fast and it killed every animal I ever shot with it.

I have a 93 that I'm still trying to figure out what to build. If I didn't have soooo many 8x57's I'd build another. I'm leaning toward 7x57 primarily because I have a new Howa takeoff barrel. Once I whack the 7 mag chamber off and rethread it it'll weigh next to nothing.

Now I'm jealous.... The one decent 7X57 I have here shoots like a house afire... and it aint mine... Wwaaaa :(

:D

Like everything in life, it just takes money.

What about a .257? I also just got a .257 Bob bbl on a 1910 mexican. Can't decide whether I want a .257 on a 93 or on a SR 98. Hmm, I hate decisions.

Anybody had any thoughts about doing a 35 remington on a small ring. I think it would make a good low pressure bambi thumper and not too hard on the shoulder. Then again I have been told that I shouldn't think

The 35 has been done. I haven' tried it but the pressures make it a natural. Touble is the non '06 sized case can be a bit troublesome. Possible feeding & extracting issues. Try a case on the bolt face and see if it grips well.

+1

Also feeding can be "troublesome" Mine feeds from the left side trouble free.. but the last round... [rt. side] is troubling me.. Once I work that out.. I'm gonna be in 35 Heaven... I vote for it!!! MV

Edit: Z, Have you checked out the 35X57? Seems like a great idea for Wildcat guys!!! I'll drop you a PM vs Hijacking this thread!!!

On my Spanish 93 7.62x39, I bought a new, unfinished extractor from one of the big suppliers (I forget which one) and ground it to fit the 7.62x39 case. I started out with the original 93 extractor, welding on to it, grinding, etc., but eventually just gave up and bought the new one.

May I make a suggestion: Use the 93 like it is with the 7x57 barrel. Do all you sporterizing using the existing stock. You'd be supprised at how much you can improve it. Start simple work up to re-barreling and such. Here is a simple sporterizing - just cut the barrel, turned it down, installed new bolt handle, blued, tapped for a scope and re-profiled and refinished the stock.riceone.
