brian923
whats the going price for a 1903 and a 1903 A3, in OK condition. i seen a couple at a gun dealer out here, but he wanted 800.00 for the 1903's, and 1700.00 for the 1903 A3's. none were in spectacular condition, and one of the 1903 A3's was rebarrelsed.. AzRednek
1700 for a 03/A3 seems a bit ridicules buy my guess is if the dealer is asking that much he is looking for offers. Unfortunately the US mil-surps are going crazy in price. Doesn't look like I'll ever get an original 1917 Enfield or US Krag. I'm to big of a cheapskate to spend that much on one rifle. Even the prices of a USA mil-surp bayonets is crazy. One way to justify the cost (in your mind anyway to relieve the guilt) is to consider it an investment. The value is likely to double every 5 or so years. If you really have to have a Springfield you are either going to have to save your nickels and dimes and shop the gun shows or find a sporter and convert it back to military configuration. I've heard a couple of horror stories about buying US mil-surps on the internet but it might be a good place to look to get an idea of what Springfields are really worth. Personally I'd be hesitant to buy one long distance, before I could invest that kind of doe on one gun I would have to have my hands and eyes on it first. I haven't priced any A3's in quite some time but I'm willing to bet you can find a serious seller at a gunshow willing to take allot less than 1700 for a decent one. My 03 was de-sportorized over the years as I found parts. Fortunately it has the original barrel and was never drilled or tapped. I started it in the early 80's or late 70's first getting a 1920's stock, then scrounged gun shows and slowly added things like milled mag assy, buttplate etc. Today it still lacks an original handguard. I have the WW2 replacement made specifically for the earlier 03 but it stands out enough hard core collectors see it right away. I had one hard core Springfield collector call my 03 a SARCO special.
