"There are no unimportant jobs in the Army, but I'm sure there are jobs that I could be more effective at than others." May I wish you the best when it comes down to the field the Army wants you for. I was never a candidate for OCS, nor did I wish to be one. I merely applied for, and stuck to my guns with, the field for which I knew I was best suited for. The field that I had been in for two years before enlisting. I hope things work out for you the way they worked out for me. But then I was just a lowly airman in the AF. I got the field I wanted, which was (or at least should have been) a no-brainer. But you never can tell about the armed services. You are their property now. fritz

Tony, What the Army does (in it's infinite wisdom) makes no sense. You should know that by now. Vaya con Dios, my friend fritz BTW, M-A-S-H comes on the tube in a half hour, and I can only picture the Army treating you the same way it did Hawkeye in that fictional epic. You aren't Hawkeye, are you? Even though some fellows here dislike the series, I like it. The Army will never change.

Shotgun News 98k Article And Rebarreling ?
fritz replied to milsurpcollector's topic in Sights, Scopes, Mounts
Since I am a cheapskate, I do not know much about the claw type mounts. But as to the question of whether there would be a problem headspacing a barrel (a military barrel) with the 98 action, as another poster put it---probably not. Much less likely than using a new after-market barrel (which will be short chambered). Even then, a hand-held reamer will do the job. As stated before, I also have had many military barrels that headspaced correctly on my receiver. That is no excuse for not checking very carefully with the proper guages, but it just seems to be the case most times. fritz -
Karl, I cannot, for the life of me, see where that came from! From the state of California (where you are licensed to teach)? Tell me I misread the above post. A California teacher willing to "buck" the system? Vaya con Dios, fritz

Subject: FW: You won't see this in the papers ? ? Sent from a friend in Eugene, Oregon. **** We have a retired principal of a Eugene High School as a neighbor. The problems listed below are common in Eugene. The newspapers report daily on homeless usually Latino.? The police reports and CW calls are heavy with teen and young adult crimes, usually Latino. This despite the marches and hoopla reported about how the legislation is needed.? Again this country must think before acting. We are still performing our act of ready, fire, aim. John *** Judi-- Woodside== I received this from a friend in Southern California and thought you would be interested. HERE'S THE MESSAGE FROM THE FRIEND. ? As you all listen to the news about the student protests over illegal immigration there are some things that you should be aware of. ? As most of you know my wife is in charge of the English-as-a-second-language department at large southern California high school, which is designated a Title 1 school, meaning that its students average lower socio economic and income levels. Most of the schools you are hearing about--South Gate High, Bell Gardens, Huntington Park, etc.--where these students are protesting, are also Title 1 schools. ? My wife tells me that 100% of the students in her school and other Title 1 schools are on the free breakfast, free lunch program. When I say free breakfast I'm not talking a glass of milk and roll... but a full breakfast and cereal bar with fruits and juices that would make a Marriott proud. The waste of this food is monumental, with trays and trays of it being dumped in the trash uneaten. ? She estimates that well over 50% of these students are obese or at least moderately overweight. About 75% or more DO have cell phones. ? The school also provides day care centers for the unwed teenage pregnant girls (some as young as 13) so they can attend class without the inconvenience of having to arrange for babysitters or having family watch their kids. ? She was ordered to spend $700,000 on her department or risk losing funding for the upcoming year even though there was little need for anything; her budget was already substantial. She ended up buying new computers for their computer learning center; half of which, one month later, have been carved with graffiti by the appreciative students who obviously feel humbled and grateful to have a free education in America. ? She has had to intervene several times for young and substitute teachers whose classes consist of many illegal immigrant students here in the country less then 3 months who raised so much hell with the female teachers, calling them "Putas"--whores--and throwing things that the teachers were in tears. ? Free medical, free education, free food, day care etc., etc., etc.? Is it any wonder they feel entitled to not only be in this country but to demand rights, privileges and entitlements? ? To my conservative friends: I hope you're really proud of how George W. Bush has helped to sell-out this country with his pro-illegal policy. I voted for him too, but on this issue he is a disaster. ? To my bleeding-heart liberal friends who want to point out how much these illegal immigrants contribute to our society because they LIKE their gardener and housekeeper and they like to pay less for tomatoes: spend some time in the real world of illegal immigration and see the TRUE costs. Higher insurance, Medical facilities closing, higher medical costs, more crime, lower standards of education in our schools, overcrowding, new diseases etc., etc., etc.? For me, I'll pay more for tomatoes. ? We need to wake up. The guest worker program will be a disaster because we won't have the guts to enforce it. Does anyone in their right mind really think they will leave and return voluntarily? ? There are many hardworking Hispanic/American citizens that contribute to our country and many that I consider my true friends. We should encourage and accept those Hispanics who have done it the right and legal way. ? It does, however, have everything to do with culture: A third-world culture that does not value education, that accepts children getting pregnant and dropping out of school by 15 and that refuses to assimilate... and an American culture that has become so weak and politically correct that we don?t have the will to do anything about it. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If this makes your blood boil, as it did mine, forward this to everyone you know. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- submitted by fritz

Here's hoping everyone has a good time with their families (especially the young ones) on this holy day. I had a most enjoyable time yesterday playing a round of golf with my son from Austin along with my hispanic friend (the one who is teaching me spanish). He wanted to meet my son, and we had a very good game. We both beat my son (guess he is out of practice). At the end of the round, my daughter-in-law brought my grandchild to the course and we fed the ducks. I believe she would have liked to go in the lake with the ducks (it looked so easy for them). Anyway, here's hoping you all have a peaceful day. fritz

And I'll drink to that one also. I will even try very hard to come up with at least a few of the boar hogs. But 72 on such short notice is gonna be tough. I'll work on it. fritz

"No. Just kill the SOB and bury him with a pig. karl" I'll go along with that, and as a final word to him I would say "Have a nice day, the pig is our gift to Allah (you are not worthy to share the same grave with the pig, but we are running out of space to bury our garbage". fritz

"This is a big part of the attraction of "doing it yourself" for me. I use to pay to have things done, and (maybe I'm an unlucky ahole) it seemed like about half the time there'd be a problem (and the other half of the time I'd wait 6 mos and nothing would have been done at all). When I moved here (to E. Carolina) it turns-out that the closest "gunsmith" that will do anything requiring a lathe is two hours away in Raleigh. Its either do it yourself or it ain't gettin' done out here. Maybe that's a good thing. It certainly has been educational, and usually fun - at least in the end." True here also. Add in the cost of the work that the pro will charge you for. You may just become one of the fellows that they keep talking about on another board. But at least you will know that you only have yourself to blame for a screwup. And that won't happen as often as some would like to believe. Been there, done that fritz

Z1r, That is the best one yet! I commend you on it. As to #10 (let the police officers who don't leave me alone, speak English)---I recall a story in a sports magazine about a fellow from Texas who was hunting down there. He was stopped on the Mexico side upon returning from Mexico because he was found to have some cartridges in his suitcase. This was late at night, and he was taken aside into a room to be interrogated. He produced a business card in the name of the Mexican Air Force Commander, and on the backside was written, "This man is my friend, and I wish you will offer him all the help he needs in our country. If there is any problem, call me". This being very late at night, the officers decided to just let him go on his way. Why bother the big shots this time of night? Moral of story---always know someone over there (the higher the office the better). I guess el Presidente Fox would be about as high as you could go. fritz

While it must be recognized that we (as a race of other than hispanic) will never equal their reproduction rate, take comfort in the fact that we are trying harder than them (the hispanics) to teach our few offspring the meaning of being an American. Ours will be better educated than theirs. A few of theirs will be more intellegent, but if they adhere to the culture of their ancestors (as so many do) they will revert back to the ways of their parent country. And I don't give a damn if they were born here or not, their parent country will always be MEXICO! fritz

That's a lot of "lly"s. Looks like they want to make their point (as they have always done) militarily. fritz

Yes, it is hard to ignore someone (and something) that is happening on this magnitude. Karl, a war is not what the mainstream Americans want (we are having enough of them already, thank you). But, if a war should come out of this (hard to visualize as this is a political hot potato with no "e") it would be about as hard to win as the war in Iraq. Remember the War of Northern Agression? This would be the War of Southern Agression, and I fear that it would take the lives of many innocent victims. We can do better. Seal the borders now, and avoid this conflict. If we don't do it soon, it will be too late. fritz

I commend you fellows for suggesting answers to this problem (and it is a problem) of how to deal with all the illegal immigrants. But, I believe BradD hit the nail on the head when he said that the democrats look at them as future voters (and we know how they would vote). This is also why the republicans, who are so desparately clinging onto power, see them also as future voters (voters that will vote AGAINST them. It is, at best, a viciuous circle! And Jason, "Grant them all citizenship and make them all claim the exact date of their entry into America.' They (the USA) made my people do that when they came here from Germany. Why the hell can't they do it to these meskins? fritz

"I agree with Dr. Hess too. There is too much money being made to ever legalize it." The same holds true in the minds of the coyotes who are making big money smuggling in illegal immigrants. They say that legalizing immigrants will cut into their charges for smuggling. Makes sense, if a Mexican can come in legally, why pay a coyote so much to transport them? They can just take the bus, maybe Bush will even arrange for a regularly scheduled bus trip into this country. No need to even stop at the checkpoints anymore, just keep on truckin! fritz

Couldn't help but notice all the illegal immigrant marchers at it again today. Not in my town, because they are too afraid of getting locked up or sent back to Mexico. And also because it is a small town and it would be a waste of their time to march here. There were many carrying signs that said "We are not criminals". Really? Then I wonder why they are so upset about a proposed bill to uphold the law that is already on the books. I believe that entering this country without documentation is, and has been for a long time, illegal, a crime. Maybe they are applying a different meaning to the word "criminal". I always thought that was someone who broke the law. Do you think that all this marching will sway our elected officials to change the law so as to allow criminals free access to this country? A good question and one that we all need to look at very seriously. fritz

"You know soon or late this PC crap is gonna turn around and bite us. While they are wasting time and effort questioning Americans some wog is gonna sneak in and plant or do a realy bad thing. Karl" They already are sneaking in, and we are just damned lucky they ain't done a really bad thing yet. If it is so easy to dodge the "checkpoints" (and I have it as fact that if a fellow wants to, he can bypass every checkpoint), then we are inviting the terrorists to enter this country through S. Texas. We are sending the bad guys a message. A message the Bush administration has intended for our "friends" south of the border. Well, his little ranchero is in central Taxas, and he has so many secret service people around it, that he don't have to worry. It's a helluva lot harder to get onto GW's ranch than it is to enter Texas illegally! fritz

"It seems I am older than dirt or no one really gives a rats patoot about the quiz..... So, I will give the answers." No, we do care about the quiz, but that is even older than me. I had heard of Barney Google (in fact, my father was a musician and if memory does not fail me) I once saw a sheet music with his name. I wish I still had that sheet. So that is going back to my father's time. fritz

I'll bet you that there ain't a single meskin coming across illegally that understands that! Wanna take the bet? fritz

The above link was very interesting, and it brings uo many questions. If a citizen has the right to carry a gun on the road, what does he do with it when entering the company parking lot? If he puts it into a locked box in his vehicle he is still technically violating his company's policy of no gun in the vehicle. Let them be more specific (as if they give a damned). Or would the company establish a "gun check" room (like the "hat check" room of the old swank establishments)? If you were a gentleman, you would check your hat at the entrance. Why can't the companies do that instead of hasseling their employees by threat of law for failure to check their guns? Well, it's not completely over yet, as long as there are organizations like the Gun Owners of America keeping a watch on the companies that violate private citizen's rights. I believe any company has the right to ban firearms from the workplace, but by God this does not include the parking lots. Unless the employee works in the parking lot. Karl, this maybe should go in a new topic, but since you mentioned racial profiling, I was having a chat today with a fellow who regularly travels the South Texas highways in his job as an oil field technician. I asked him if he saw any illegal aliens along those roads between the border and Goliad. He replied, "Damned right! I see them every day, with their milk jugs of water walking around the check points." I asked him "then why is it that me and mrs fritz always get stopped and questioned when we (an elderly white couple) returning from a convention in the Valley? He said it was due to racial profiling. They have to stop and question as many elderly white folks as they stop and question young hispanic travelers. Otherwise they would be under attack for racial profiling. Now, this is what the Bush administration and the fundillos who make the rules on racial equality, really are shoving down our throats! fritz

"I don't know why they let it get this bad. The only thing I can think of is that with the baby boomers (of which I am on the tail end) starting to retire and no one to pay for all the benefits that have become "entitlements", they are trying to bring in all the Mexicans to pay for it all. That isn't going to happen. " Of course it ain't going to happen, because the Mexicans do not pay taxes. They somehow get a job here using a fake SS number (if the greedy employer even requires one). Then they send most of their wages home to Mexico. How do you think their kin folks get the dinero to pay a coyote? Even if they are subject to income tax (and this comes from a hispanic friend who worked with them) they claim a dozen dependents. The fact that they do NOT have a dozen and that those don't live in this country never gets investigated. A dozen dependents allows them enough deduction to avoid the tax. They are helping the greedy employer make more money, and not contributing to the cost of running this country and the healthcare of their offspring. Try that one, my friend. And some folks think they are dumb! fritz
