Thanks z1r. It shoots to the left. Hum. ..I had not considered those points. I was using greased pads from Cabala's. But now that you mention it..I did seem to have better results with Crisco. That bit about the front sight is brilliant. It NEVER would have occurred to me to BEND A SIGHT!!! : ) I Will give your suggestions a try and report back. Thank you Karl

Fellas. I have decided to put adjustable sights on my Remington 58. Boy..I can never go back to Bill's site after this : ) First, I am gonna get a laser sight for a pistol and hook that on. If that does not please me, I am going to install a regular iron sight. I have some files and have been practicing cutting groves in plastic. Karl...not a purist. I know ...I know..they sell a Remington 58 WITH adjustable sights and I SHOULD have gotten it, but I wanted to 'EXPERIENCE" shooting the original Civil war gun. This is Cali after all : ) Karl

I tend to prefer the bent bolt as well. But if you have a stuck case, a straight bolt is a lot easer to knock open. Karl

FC. Save your money. I acquired one of those to clean computers. It did not work. It leaked and lacked power. You are better off with a can or two of air. Karl

Fellas. I went to the range today: .44 rem cap and ball. 9MM Walter P-1 and a M1 carbine. The .44 groups well but four inches to the LEFT at 25 meters and the sights are fixed..gad. OK. I pull out the P-1, I adjusted the sights, so this has gotta be better. The bullets were all over the target the groups were worse than the .44 ??!! So I take on old M1 carbine. Now on a good day I can put the rounds in the black all day at 100 meters..I shall restore my pride! it was NOT a good day!!! I could hit the gong at 250 meters but the shots were all over the target at 100 and the more I adjusted the sights the worse it got. I think I am gonna take lessons at the "Helen Keller" institute of marksmanship. Karl

Who Has The Best Price On Cap And Ball Pistols?
karlunity replied to karlunity's topic in Chewing the Cud
"stuff for sale second-hand on Sassnet forums." Thanks FC. But I don't buy used guns from folks I don't know. Most don't clean or care for their guns as they should. I think I will go with Cabals. Take care Karl -
I was watching TV and a fella said that he got 16 years for shooting two people who broke into his home in Tennessee when he was there. Does that sound right? Karl

Fellas. I am thinking of adding a Colt 1860 New Army to the collection. Cabalas has them for between $ 199 and $ 209 plus s/h of about 10 bucks. Any one know of a better deal? Thanks Karl

Making Paper Cartridges
karlunity replied to karlunity's topic in Black Powder Cartridge & Cowboy Shooting
Results of the field test. The paper cartridges work but some have a problem loading and some leave a ring of unburned paper in the cylinder. I can see where a solider in the field would need them , but at a range, if you have a loading stand, You are better off just loading loose power and ball. Now on the Boot pistol, a single shot muzzle loader, the paper cartridges were an advantage as you did not need a patch and could ram the whole cartridge home. Karl -
This is a very good short history of the Marine Corps. It is worth a look. Merry Christmas . Karl

Making Paper Cartridges. Required: an unprimed or fired 8mm shell case.( Old Bradan primed Turk cases are ideal) Double wide rolling paper. .44 ball. I use .454. powder and flask. ( you could use a dipper but you will need 3 hands or to make a shell holder) Scissors. Step 1. Lick the paper and place it on the table. Step 2 Place the ball and shell casing in the paper. The bottom of the shell must extend over the bottom of the paper and the ball should be a bit down from the top. Step 3. Roll the paper and twist the top. Remove the shell and use the flask to pour in the measure of power. Step 4. Twist the bottom of the paper. Step 5. Use the scissor to cut off the tips of the bottom and top twist. Step 6. Load and go shooting. I have not yet been to the range with this. I am going on Tuesday. I shall field test and report back. If you cut off the base of the shell with a tube cutter, you can pour the powder right into the paper. Karl

I would suggest the "Remington 1858 New Army" as a first BP pistol. I like the look of the 1860 Colt as well and one is on the list, but the Remington is in MHO the better pistol, although I think the grip on the Colt is better. I got the Remington for several reasons: The first was that the sight picture is better. You sight along the top-strap as you would with a modern revolver. On the Colt revolver the hammer is the rear sight so it moves when the pistol is fired. The Colt strips into three pieces: The cylinder, the body and the barrel. You have to push out the wedge to remove the barrel to remove the cylinder. With the Remington you just pull down the loading leaver a bit pull forward a pin and the cylinder is off. Last: The top-strap gives the frame added strength. So better sights ..easier to field strip for cleaning and a stronger frame. Still, I do like the look and feel of the Colt and as I said it is on the list. Sooner, rather than later, if Cabalas has a sale. : ) Take care Karl

Fellas. I went to the range today. Remington Army 1858 .44 Swiss K-31. The wind was so bad that I had to stop shooting the pistol as the target boards were blowing away!! However the pistol shot well and was not hard to reload using a stand. The honors of the day go to the K-31. The Swiss make good rifles. The only thing I had left to shoot at after the boards blew away as the 2 by 2 iron plate at 250 meters. This is meant for the scope guys but the K-31 with issue iron sights firing from sandbags hit the plate 19 out of 25 shots and this with a VERY VERY strong cross wind. I could not have done better with a Mauser. Karl

Fellas. One of the good things about the teaching racket is the time off. (I may never get rich, but I get range time. : ) ) I took a Remington new army and a Richardson boot pistol. The Remington, a .44, shoots better than some of my "Modern" pistols. I was able to keep 3 out of 6 in the black at 25 meters, for me with a pistol, that is very good. I think the long barrel may be a factor. The Richardson, being a smooth bore, has a effective range of only 30 feet but it is fun to shoot. I found different spouts for the power-flask and that and the loading stand( which, being an idiot, I forgot today) for the .44 makes loading a lot easer. karl

Jim I have to agree with FC on this. First: get a better accountant. Second: We have about 500 members so if most kicked in, say 10 to 20 bucks that would come to between 5 and10 grand. That is not going to kill us and I know you would do the same for us. Think about it. Karl
