I went with the Pietta as a first Cap and Ball, as the price was less and I have read a bad report on the Uberti. If I get more, I will give them a try.

    Fellas

Thanks I will get some pads at the BP store tomorrow.

You know, it is a wonder that these early revolvers found favor with the infantry in the Civil War.

I could see Calvary using them in a mêlée, but over a long infantry battle with all the dirt and mud , how did they clean them?

Some sites say the that only way to clean them is take them completly apart and pour on hot water on them or soak them with boiling water.

Hot water was dam hard to find in Nam 100 years later.

How Lee or Grant's guys found it after every battle is byond me.

  2. I went to the range with the Remington New Model Army 1858.

    First the good parts:

It has to be the most powerful handgun I have ever fired.

It put holes in the target the size of grapes!!!!

The 1858 is as accurate as my other pistols.

It took no longer to clean than my other revolvers.

    Now the bad parts:

Having to cover the chambers with Crisco or bore butter is a real pain.

The grips tend to become slippery.

On the whole, I am glad that I got the pistol, but I don't think I am going to start a "collection".

  3. But my mind keeps going to a good friend of mine, they just learned that their beautiful 16 year old daughter has bone cancer.I have no problems. Thanks Jim

Jim, you are a good man.

    I agree.

As long as the Hippy is ok, nothing bothers me.

  4. Hello fritz.

"Is your's blue or nickel? Mine is nickel, and I like the cylinder removal better than the Colt 1860."

    fritz.

Mine is blue. I think that you are right about the cylinder.

I have cleaned mine and lubed it, the nipples were hard to remove.

I am glad that I removed and lubed them before I went shooting as I think that it would have been a job to remove dirty ones.

I have been reading up on how to smooth the trigger and hammer, but I am going to shoot it BEFORE I try and "fix" it. Gee.. it only took 57 years for me to grow a brain. : )

  5. Fellas.

I was shooting the "boot pistol" with real BP.

It has no sights but by laying the trigger finger along the side using it as a pointer, the old point of aim point of impact, and using the third finger as a "trigger finger" I was in the black at 25 meters and could see dust at 50 when I over shot.

Any one know what the range or Muzzle energy on one of these smooth bore muzzle loaders is?

  6. Still kinda stinks not to have the new toy. What happened to it anyway?

Well, the 51 navy had problems.

The hammer would not consistently engage the sear, it would come half way back, about three out of 6 shoots, and stop. You would have to lower the hammer and try again this, of course, played heck with the firing sequence.

I returned it for a refund, but after a few days, called in and asked to pay the difference and make it an exchange instead for a Rem new Army.

I figured that it would take a week or two, but the lady said 3 to 6 days.

When it did not show up, I called and asked for a "tracking" number and was told that they had not received it. That was quickly cleared up, but I was told that as it was a gun, someone from the "gun dept" had to check it, please call back on Friday.

I did, and was told that no word had come back and would I please call back on Tuesday.

Everyone there was very nice and a week or two is not a long time for mail order, but I was sorta hoping for" the 3 to 6 days."

I will let you know how it comes out.

Thanks fellas, that makes me feel better. I guess, I just gotta grow up learn patience. : )

  7. $ 400 to replace a hard drive!!!!!

A HD for a desk top runs about $ 100 for a 200 gig( a very big HD) and takes ten minutes to put in.

As for service, that is just tightening cables and blowing out the dust with a can of air.

Most of the time, a HD will freeze if it is clogged, or has a virus.

I use these to keep the old box running. They are free.

  8. Fellas.

    What do you think?

The clock on the computer was slowing down so I changed the battery.

After that I get "CMOS checksum error and the CMOS setting default.

(I have my computer hooked to a power station which I shut down at night)

I checked the battery and set the CMOS to "default" but I keep getting that error .

    any Ideas?

  9. Fellas.

As you know I have been bitten by the Black powder bug.

First, a boot pistol from SOG and then a CSA .44 from Cabala.Well, I had to return and on second exchange the CSA .44 for a 1858 Army,I am still waiting to hear from Cabala's "gun dept" on that one.

Seems they have to "check the gun before making the exchange".

In any case, I was use a neo-black powder powder called "American Brand".

I was double loading the smooth bore boot pistol and just about making a hole in the target at 10 ft.

Well, I took Uncle DuPont's advice and got some Goex BP. I had to go to LA (160 mile round trip) as no one local had any.

Boys , It was worth the trip.!!!!!

Using a set of "Lee dippers" I gave the "Boot pistol" a charge of 17.4 and (it is .36 cal) and it went through the target at 25 meters and kicked up dust at 50 meters.

Using "point of aim point of impact" I was hitting a NRA rifle bull at 25 meters. : )

Now this might not seem like much to some fellas, but if you consider that I am a lousy pistol shot with a Walter P-1 wit sights, it speaks well for a Muzzle loader smooth bore with none, : )

The Black powder was no harder to clean with MP-Pro 7 than the weak powder.
