fritz
Thanks for the post, Tony. But the figures stated on sales tax (by state) can be quite misleading. It said that California charges the most (7.25%) sales tax, I believe. Well, here in most parts of Texas we pay 8.25% sales tax. The article fails to mention (in referring to state sales tax) that cities and transportation entities charge a surcharge that ranges from 2% to 3%. That makes the effective Texas sales tax anywhere from 8.25% to 9.25%. Instead of 6.25%. Only if a business is located outside a city or incorporated area, do we pay 6.25% (which is the "official" state rate). I believe that in San Antonio you pay an extra sales tax to pay for the Alamo Dome. It all adds up. fritz
FC
I was thinking about that too, but that is just the state tax. It is hard to figure out where the cheapest place is, esp. with the mention of incomes vary on locale. For instance, S.D. is dirt cheap to live, but income is low. I guess it boils down to the complexity of balancing income to expense in your locale.
fritz
Quite right about that being a complex situation as to where to live cheapest. I prefer to live where the weather fits my clothes (and I ain't got no fur coats). Since Texas was somewhere in the middle of those figures (somewhere), I will continue to live between the Red and the Rio Grande. While the weather sometimes does not fit my clothes here (and there is a booger norther coming tomorrow), we just have to wait a few days and it will change. I wonder if that chart took into consideration the fact that people in the northern states (regardless of their income) have a very high heating bill in winter. That is why we get a lot of winter Texans here, and we welcome them. They are good people. On that subject, I have lost a good friend from Wisconsin that comes here each winter. He died in his sleep sunday. He was elderly, and I can think of worse ways to go. fritz
