Karl, I don't know how other Southern states are. In Texas they take defense of your property very serious. I remember a couple three years ago there was a news segment where a homeowner woke up to two guys in his house. He chased them down the stairs and out the door and blew them off his porch with a shotgun killing them. the police spokesman at the scene told the reporter "they picked the wrong house" and then the reporter in the studio started laughing and said they won't make that mistake twice. :)

Az has a strange law. It allows a home owner to threaten deadly force to protect property but you can't pull the trigger unless you're protecting yourself or family from serious harm or protecting your life. The cop that taught my CCW class recommended putting a butcher knife in the perp's hand if you had to blow him away for stealing your TV. The best thing to do, according to the instructor, is tell the cops you shot in self defense and say no more until you get a lawyer. He also used another example of somebody stealing your car. You tried to stop him but he attempted to run you over. The instructor said right or wrong be prepared to spend tens of thousands in legal fees.

At least it isn't as bad as California and some other states. If somebody is breaking in your front door you might have to prove you couldn't have escaped harm by going out the back door.

When I was a mailman one of my patrons owned a gas station. He was robbed at gunpoint and shot the thief in the back as he left with the money. The thief apparently had inside knowledge from an employee as he arrived when the time lock was set on the safe. A member of the owner's family would arrive every night at apx the same time to open the safe and either pick up all the day's cash or put it in the safe. The thief died several days later. He took a 9MM HP in the lung. My postal patron was charged with 2nd degree murder. He spent several years in prison. If I remember right he plea bargained 6 or 7 years of a possible 20+ year sentence. The thief's family got a civil judgment and the owner's business liability insurance settled for 6 figures.
