I have several stocks from him he accurately describes them and the inleting is excellent. The outside dimensions are oversized though and the do require alot of wood removal ,to say the least they are bulky. Never the less he has a good product good communication and is fast to ship. I am currently using one to stock the 338-06 I am putting together hope to post pics soon. James

Take the standard and intermediate firing pins and lay them side by side. You will notice that some of the groves line up while some dont. The standard firing pin has one grove more to the rear and the intermediate has one more to the front. With carful use of a dremel tool and cut off wheels and some small files you can add another grove to the front of the std. to match the intermediate. the rear most grove and step on the std will need to be removed and left the smaller diameter then excess can be cut off. Take your time and check cocking piece for fit often. You will notice that it will become nescesary to take the end of the std pin down to the smaller diameter first so that you can get the cocking piece on to check fit. I do mine on my lathe is much easier to do, but if you take your time and go slow you can do it yourself. There a few guys on this forum that can do it for you at minimal cost if you dont feel comfortable doing it yourself. I have had the best results with KG Gunkote, I have tried both types of duracoat and the ceramacoat from brownell's. The ceramacoat is a close second to the KG IMHO. James

I like what you've done with this one and the bolt head you bushed Got me to start thinking. I went out and put 243 dummy rounds in mine and it feeds them good also 7x57 and 6mm rem. 8x57 binds just a little at the front of the mag on the wider shoulder of the 8x57 case. I need to get my bolt bushed and adjust the extractor like you did. Do you have any pics of how you shimmed the extractor. I have not worked on any mosins so this is a learn deal for me. The bolt is a lot like a carnaco but differnt at the same time figuring it out as i go. Have you mounted a scope yet. If so what base did you use? My mosin has the hex receiver it is the only one I have and the bore is trashed so I have been thinking of doing something along the lines of what you have been doing with yours. James

AZ if still possible I would like one of the mosin triggers. Should probably post this under mausers but I am sure we can move it if needed but I could use a couple of mauser 98 triggers maybe we could do a group by on some of them also. James

The shanks on most of the ruger barrels are long enough and have a large enough O.D. to thread to large or small ring and still have enough shank left to look good and fit in barrel vise. James

I have noticed most of the same things the economy may have some thing to do with it so may our comander in chief.But building mausers has slowed down. I havent taken the time to take pics of anything that I have been working on been using my spare time to hunt and work and not fight with photobucket to post pics. I still check in here regularly to see whats going on and to see if there any new pics and am glad to see there are some new members working on projects. I have a few that i am working on and will make an effort to get my photobucket account updated so i can post pics again and show some off some of what I have learned since first visiting this site. thanks for the replies i knew i could count on yall i am nagant illiterate but i am catching on it is a 7.62 x 54 but the bore looks terrible i may try and find a good barrel for it and the stock has a couple of cracks that need to be repaired but they are not major i been busy hunting and havent had a chance to take or post pics but i will try to in the next couple of days thanks, james

WOW that turned out really nice and the leather work is also impressive. I have been trying to find D2 tool steel but havent had any luck around here in finding 3/16 or 1/8" stock my uncle has a knife made out of it i used it to field dress and skin 4 deer and never had to sharpen it the only knife i have now that comes close is made out of a high carbon stainless that i havent been able to identify my uncle had it made when he lived in california but the makers name is not on it and he doesnt remember keep up the good work james

In texas you can get a non-resident general hunting license for 5 days at a cost of $35 most of the time you can find day hunts for around $50 . If you do a little home work you can hunt management and state land but have to get a permit that was costing $35 or so if you dont procces it yourself and take it to a meat market you can expect to pay around $100 for them to process it. James

I have finally had a chance to test the 165 grain SST bullets on a wide aray of game this season. My findings in my opinion are that the bullet lacks structual integrety. From hogs and axis deer to whitetail bullet terminal performance has been marginal. The only pass throughs experianced where on head and neck shots, on shoulder and lung shots there was no wound channel or minimal wound channel in oppisite side. I have also been unable to recover any bullet pieces large than a pin head. Lung and shoulder shots produced excessive blood shot and meat loss. I am shooting this bullet at 2900+- fps out of my 30-06. Shots at game animals where taken at ranges from 80 to 500 yds with most being 125 to 150 yards terminal performance was slightly better at the longer ranges. Although the SST is accurate it in no way compares to the Hornady Interlocks, Sierra Game Kings , Nosler Partitions or Accubonds in terminal perfomance. The performance of the Hornady SST is alot like the older Nosler Balistic Tip bullets but, with them I used to find the bullet jacket heal sans core. I was testing the SST in my 308 Norma Mag but will will discontinue as I feel that at 3200+- fps they will perform like varmit bullets. I know that alot of hunters perfer that a bullet expend all its energy in a game animal I am not of this opinion. I hunt in areas where the ground is hard and cover is dense if a game animal runs after being hit they are very hard to track. I perfer and exit wound when ever possible and a blood trail to follow. With the Sierra Game Kings, Nosler Partition and Accubonds I get an exit wound unless game animal is squarely hit in both shoulders in which case it is broken down and goes nowhere. Meat loss and blood shoting is also minimal with the Sierra and Nosler bullets. Why am I even using the SST bullets you might ask, like many of you, I reload and have a large assortment and varity of bullets and brands on my reloading bench. On this particular 30-06, when first testing it I loaded up 165 grain Sierra's and 165 grain SST's with the same powder and charge weight and although the Sierra's shot under and inch the SST's shot 1/2 inch cloverleafs. With hunting season days away I decide to use the SST's to save time. After working up an accurate load I like to field test it and am reporting my findings to hopefully save you the time and expense of loading and testing the SST to find that it does not meet your expectations. Hogs make great test media and are good eating as a bonus. I will continue using the SST in my 30-06 this season but will limit its use to hunts for doe, hogs and varmits on ranches where we are reducing numbers for management purposes. With a little luck I will be able to expend my stock of SST's and will discontinue thier use. Another noteable finding was that on the few pass throughs the area around the exit hole was littered with small holes and copper fragments. Other than being an accurate bullet I do not believe the SST is constructed tuff enough for larger game animals and consider their penetration marginal at best.I believe that the particular gliding metal used in thier jacket construction is to brittle and tends to fragment rather than bend and mushroom. The only saving grace of thier performance is that regardless of shot placement all game animals dropped pretty much in thier tracks good ? yes but I still perfer an exit wound and the minimal meat loss characteristics of other bullets better.In hind sight the SST performs alot like the Berger bullets I tested I my 25 WSM a few years ago. I would like to hear from the rest of you on your opinions of the different bullets available and thier performance or lack there of. James

The nickel rod Clemson is talking about is only 3 to 5% nickel i have used 6011 and 7818 rods with good success but the problem lies in the amount or color of blueing it will take will it match the rest of the gun or part ? a matte finsh helps hide any slight color mismatches hope this helps james

i agree that you should try a fully resized case if there is only slight resistance you can try lapping the bolt lugs for the last couple of thousandths you need i just put a 308 norma together with min head space i actually have slight resistance against go gauage just as bolt fully closes but full lenght resized brass chambers just fine goes to show you just how much variation there is in gauges seems like there is as much as .006 between go and no go and about another .004 to .006 between field and no go on i have not ever taken the time to see how much diff there is in full lenght resised case but that would also depend on your particular dies and shell holder as a side note i also have seen gun nuts face off their shell holder or die so that brass can be resized enough to chamber not sure if i would ever do this though for fear that reloads for that gun may end up being fired in a different one james

thanks guys as for the nursinig home i intend to plan a bear hunt about that time then walk up behind the biggest meanest bear i can find and kick him square in the ass with a little luck the bear wont go hungry and i wont have to worry about the nursing home
