  1. Morning, First off I want to say Thanks for the add to this forum. I own a small 07 Gunsmithing business in GA. I hope to contribute as well as take some good knowledge from this group... I have an Argentine Mauser in my shop. I am have an issue with the bolt. When you lift the handle and try to pull it to the rear to eject the spent shell, It will lift but it will not pull back. The only way to get it to slide back its to lightly tap it with a nylon mallet. What could be causing this? I dug out my chamber polisher this morning. I will clean the chamber up and let you know what happens. If anyone has encountered this issue in the past. Please drop a line to let me know what you had and how you handled it. Thanks Randy
  2. I like to look at others projects. My workbench is empty, and I have lot's of Mauser action's and barrel's. Give me some ideals. Show them off, bubba or not. Few pic's are fine, or whatever. I have completed about 5 sporter's, I will post some build pictures soon.
  3. Hello, I am Fyrd and I am new here. I have a topic that is probably broadly familiar and I need some input. I am about to purchase one of those guns we all come across from time to time. Not one on my want list, but too good a deal to pass up. This one is a Loewe Berlin 1891 Argentine Mauser. It has the crest ground and is sporterized, probably by a professional. That rich German Blue is about 90%,and the perfect fit and finish. With a classic Weaver K-4 with a post it reeks of that between the wars classic sporter. I have never been a fan of the 1891, but this specimin is just too good to pass up. The problem: I don't load 7.65x53 nor do I care to do so. I have done some research and would ask for opinions and suggestions about how to proceed. Plan 1. Rechamber the gun to 7.7 jap, a caliber I already load. From the reloading manuals I have scene the chamber should clean up nicely. The information I have indicate that mild loads of the 7.7 shouldn't overpower the 1891. Thoughts? Plan 2. I have heard of there being a chamber insert that allows one to fire 7.62x39 in these guns. Anyone heard of this? Any clue where to find one? Plan 3. Rebarrel to 7x57 Mauser, which we also currently load. (Note: the way I am getting this gun precludes me from selling it right away......) Thanks Fyrd
  4. I recently started looking for a rifle for my father as a "you're a grandpa" gift. His requests were "something interesting" and also "a Normal caliber". I was out bid on a few nicely sporterized Springfields, and Husqvarna rifles. What I finally found practically in my back yard was an R.Famage Mauser. These rifles started life as Kar 98s and some other various models. in the 50's the guns were shipped to South America where they were converted to fire the American 30-06. Most people imagine South Americans armed with FALs, and Russian rifles. so where did the 30-06s go? many traveled over the border and were turned into cheap deer guns. I can only imagine who bought this rifle with the care they put into it I know they were proud of it. The stepped barrel has been cut back to balance out the rifle. The safety was removed for scope clearance, topped with a fixed power Monoscope; the 6x should be more than sufficient for any hunting my father dreams of doing. I'm not sure of the scope mounts, i've never seen one like it before. I really enjoy the mister handy type butter knife bolt. i may replace it at a later date but for now it looks neat. The rifle is housed nicely in a Bishop wood stock. I added the Millitary leather sling to give it a little nod of it's heritage. all and all this gun only cost me 250. thoughts, ideas, concerns?
  5. It's ready to shoot. Enjoy the pics. It is a Boyds Prairie Hunter stock. Laminated. Nutmeg color. I followed the directions to a T, except I used rubbing polyurethane rather than spray. I highly recommend the Boyds, it came out much better than I even dreamed. The color is slightly darker than I expected but it is pretty. In letting was not too bad. Next step is the range, where I will be shooting 139G flat nose, in front of 9G bullsesye at about 1600 fps, just to start out. Knife in the pic is my new Buck Ranger with finger grooves, I just bought it today, I always wanted one, to go with the rifle to hunt this fall.
