davidk98
Hi, also posted at MC but i think this forum matches better on the issue! i bought a for little money a K98 from Poland! It says on the crest PFK Warzawa 1926! I would like to get some information on these rifles! It has a hunting stock on it and i would like to use this rifle for hunting! The barrel looks a bit rough with pitting but i havent shoot it yet! Is it safe or will the barrel explode? Is it possible that a rough barrel can shoot good? If it turns out that the barrel is worn , is it possible to screw in a aftermarket sporter barrel? How is the qualitiy of these actions? Another question is what to do that the bolt handel will not touch the scope! The bolt looks like this bolt it is not my rifle though! Thanks David from the Mauser motherland! Horsefly
Good morning David, and welcome to our board! It's 4:30 am here in Texas and I'm about to head to work, but if no one answeres your questions today,I'll dig my books out this afternoon and give you some info. on your Polish Mauser. It should be a fine rifle, and sometimes a bore that looks a little ruff will shoot good groups.Your bolt handle will have to be cut off and a new one welded on like a modern rifle or you can have it bent(forged) to clear your scope. You can replace the barrel, but it's not as simple as screwing on another. It has to be headspaced.Got to go,but maybe some others will chime in today and help you more. ken98k
Welcome! You've come to the right place. pretty much anything you want to know about Mauser rifles can be found here. Sounds like you have the polish version of the German GEW98. It should be an excelent candidate for customizing. Like Horsefly said there is more to it than just screwing on a new barrel. tinkerfive
Hi, The barrel looks a bit rough with pitting but i havent shoot it yet! Is it safe or will the barrel explode? Well, maybe so don't shoot it yet. never! Never!! NEVER!!! fire a gun with a dirty / rusty / rough bore. The bullet needs to be able to exit the barrel smoothly to prevent dangerous ( explosive ) pressure spikes. Start by attempting to clean it as you would any gun. Cleaning solvents and patches. If you are able to push the patch through smoothly without tearing up the patch, you may be OK. I emphasize that you MUST be able to push the cleaning patch through smoothly without tearing it up. If the patch is tearing up and you can see flecks of the cloth caught in the bore then you have more work to do. A trick I found in one of my books is to wind fine steel wool into a bore brush. The steel wool will compress into the brush. Make a few strokes and add more steel wool. Do this for a while then alternate with the cleaning patch and jag until the patch and jag will push smoothly without tearing up the patch. At that point it likely won't explode. You will want to check that it doesn't have excess head space. Repeated firing with excess head space will likely eventually damage the locking lugs / seats. Is it possible that a rough barrel can shoot good? not likely but maybe. If it turns out that the barrel is worn , is it possible to screw in a aftermarket sporter barrel? Yes, providing that you have the reamer for a short chambered barrel or a lathe for a long chambered barrel AND the headspace gauges in either case. Another question is what to do that the bolt handel will not touch the scope! The bolt looks like this bolt it is not my rifle though! The handle will either need to be replaced or forged into a low configuration. You'll likely need to change the safety flag too. Thanks David from the Mauser motherland! Also WELCOME! davidk98
Hi, well i fired the rifle! Everything was ok. I had some friends who are more into old rifles have look trough the barrel! They said it will be fine! First shots were on 50m! Due to the low light and the bad open sights i had 4 shots an about 4" ! i used Prvi Patizan Ammo! Next week i gonna try i with a scope on it! The muzzel needs probably to be recrowned! Yesterday i ran some patches trough the bore and had no tear ups! I used toiletpaper patches Works just fine! Maybe load up some pics later!
